I have been having some serious algae issues in my 42 gallon rimless Cadlights tank and was very dissatisfied with my 3rd generation Eshopps PSK 75 skimmer for various reasons. It was time for a change. The three main things on my list were (1) great performance; (2) small footprint and (3) budget friendly. After doing research online and talking to MarineDepot customer service reps I went with an Aquamaxx WS-1 in sump skimmer.
First of all, the skimmer comes fully preassembled. No need to follow instructions. Just unwrap the skimmer, put the collection cup on and you are ready to go. I really like the smaller footprint of the skimmer but don't let the size of it fool you. In just two days it has outperformed my old skimmer that I had for over two months. I did not rinse the skimmer in freshwater or vinegar as some might recommend. But in just two days the skimmer is pulling out a lot of dirt. It is also very quiet. Overall this is a great protein skimmer under $200 and I could not be happier with it. Thanks Marine Depot for outstanding service. Here are some pictures.
