I have a 24 gallon JBJ Bio Cube with the following:

- pair of Ocellaris clowns
- purple fire fish
- RBTA
- peppermint shrimp
- porcelain crab
- various snails
- various hermits

Tank has been up for about 10 months. I've had the female Ocellaris for about 2 years (my first fish), she was moved from my 90 when I set up the bio cube and I added her partner at that time. They appear to have paired nicely.

About a week ago I added a RBTA. It found it's happy place and began hosting my clowns about 2 days ago.

Today I've noticed my clowns have become very aggressive towards my peppermint shrimp. The shrimps color has changed to a much darker red, and it's tail is almost black (I assume because it's stressed). It was hiding behind the power-head for a while, then the clowns found it, so it set up on top of the return nozzle and got chased away again. Now it's hiding in my duncan. Once they find it, they start harassing it.

I've also noticed my female Ocellaris has developed some black spots (the male is black so who knows).

So I'm looking for some opinions on why the sudden change in behavior. Here are some of my thoughts.

First is that they are becoming more territorial because of the RBTA; but it's not as if the shrimp is approaching it, they tend to seek it out. They don't do this with anything else in the tank. They nip at the craps and snails, but only if they get right up on the anemone.

Second thought is they are hungry. I've been trying to watch how much I feed very closely. I'm feeding 1/2 a frozen cube of brine once a day, and they devour it and are looking for more. Maybe I need to feed more.

Another thought is that they may be spawning. I really have no idea how to tell. They have been acting a little weird the past week or so; I assumed it was because they were courting the anemone.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Any opinions/advice?

I don't have any pics of the black spots or shrimp. Lights are out for the night, so I'll see if I can get some tomorrow.

The shrimp didn't make it. He was still alive when I got home today, but the clowns were still harassing him. Went out for a little bit and when I returned my Halloween crab was having an "all you can eat" shrimp buffet.

I noticed when I took out my RBTA, my Maroon Clown got along quite well with my Ocellaris.

I'm curious to learn what the black spots are.
my opinion on the behavior is that they have became very territorial in a small tank. Shrimp is a scavenger amd will take food from the nem. I think part of their symbiotic relationship is that the clowns will guard the nem from such behavior.

My only guess is stings from the anemone?

I was worried the tank is too small. Only plans are for more coral, small clam, and maybe one more fish (something real small like a clown goby), but maybe that's a bad idea?

I'd also love to have a shrimp in there, maybe I'll try again in a few months when things settle down.
