talk to me about eels

the pet store discontinued their saltwater section. all they have left is a 10" green wolf eel. poor thing is in a 10g tank with virtually no hiding places. the back of the tank is open, i don't know how he hasn't made his escape yet!

i have a 40b tank that's never been set up. i'd love to have him but i know absolutely nothing about them other than he surely wouldn't fit in my 75g reef.

No small fish or crustaceans, by what I know they can be aggressive. It would definitely be an interesting addition to an aggressive tank. Could you get a bigger tank and maybe add a few other fish that you can't have in your reef tank?

Actually, not a true eel, but instead a type of dottyback. It can be aggressive and predatory to inverts a small fish. Very hardy and an interesting fish in the proper setting.

yes, i have read that very thing. would the 40b be an appropriate size? how big do they get? are they as much of an escape artist as true eels are? this guy has two huge places in the top/back that he would easily be able to get to but they say he has never gone missing.

nope, 40b is as big as i can go and even at that, i'm gonna have to shuffle some furniture and ginormous dog beds around. :)

Lol that sounds like me, except mine have a couch as well, the beds come out when they have friends over.

The tank you can provide will be much better than what it is currently in and I would venture to say better than whoever might buy him other than you

I suggest you buy him. Yes, a 40b will be a bit small once he grows up, but it's much better than a 10g. You can either upgrade the tank in future or just keep an eye out for someone who can give him an upgrade, but he's probably going to either die or escape if he's left in that 10g. That, or somebody with no idea what they're doing will buy the poor thing.
Bottom line, when it comes to tanks, slightly too small and clean is much better than tiny and probably ignored.

way to lay a guilt trip on me! LOL!!

if i set up the 40b and get this guy, that'll be it. i have virtually NO room to set up a bigger tank.

i have 2 great danes and live in a 16'x80' mobile home. they pretty much rule the roost when it comes to sleeping places. and to make matters worse, i have a friend who is trying hard (and almost succeeding) to get me to take another dane that's in rescue up north. ;)

If he is the sole inhabitant he will be fine in the 40.

I have a green wolf eel. Great personality...we went to the lfs and they had this eel for 6 mths and the wife wanted it. So set up a tank just for it it's a 60 gallon tank. With no lid. She doesnt try to escape. She has several tank mates now. A purple tang, blue spot puffer and a clarkie. Smallest fisg is the blue spot at about 1.5 inch. She has never eaten a tank mate. It is hand feed. She will change colors also.

another question...i have a large, open room with lots of windows. there are a couple of places where i could put a 40b without having to move a lot of stuff around to accommodate it and where it wouldn't get a lot of direct sunlight. since this guy would be the only inhabitant and i don't plan on any corals other than maybe some of the pesky anthelia i have i my 75g reef, do i necessarily need any sort of fancy schmancy lights or would just the stock light that came with the tank be enough?

Stocklight should be fine.

i wouldn't mind that at all, john, but that would mean we'd have to wait till MA '15 to set everything up. i'd rather spend time making fun of aliie when she hears the dogs crunching bones and doing other fun stuff. ;)

i'll just hit petco and see if i can find something reasonably inexpensive there.
