View Full Version : Crosshatch Triggers Acting Weird During "The Change"...

Hey everyone (Ted),

I have a quick question about how our Crosshatches are acting.

We got a small pair of Crosshatches a while ago when they were both around 4".

The male had a slightly red tail and yellow fins. The female had a yellow tail and brown/red fins.

Over the time in QT and time in the display the male sort of lost the red in his tail, but kept the yellow fins.

Today I noticed he is much more golden in color, his yellow fins are much deeper yellow but his tail still isn't red.

I'd say overnight he got 200% darker in color.

The female is now hiding in the back corner of the tank, will come out every now and then. The male will make his presence known and the female will retreat.

I haven't seen any bite marks on the female or her fins, just she seems very shy of the male now.

Is this normal behavior for these fish?
Does it sound like the male is become a real male now?
Is the female being timid / submissive normal for this period?

Thanks :)

The lack of red tail has me wondering what's going on. Are they both still the same size? Do you still see the aggression like you posted about a few months ago?

No aggression...

The female just seems super timid right now.

Yeah. One has started getting much darker and has very pronounced yellow fins like a male. Same one that had a red tail at first. Body has gotten darker and yellow fins stronger. Still yellow tail though.

Unfortunately It switch back to female
I had few that did that. When there is more dominant fish in the tank.

Xhatch are weird sometimes

Wonder what the chances of getting a lone female and having her change to a him?

Probably pretty low.

Would a 4" male show full coloration?

If they are both females why are they kind of different?

Fish 1:
Silver Color
Brown/Red Fins
Yellow Tail

Fish 2:
Darker Silver to Gold Color (Many shades darker than Fish 1)
Bright Yellow Fins
Yellow Tail

Dominant fish in the tank is a Yellow Belly Blue Tang.

Today the female seems less shy than yesterday.

Crosshatch triggers start to show sex at 3-4" so a male at 4" could show full male coloration

Yeah it's hard to capture in videos, but if you look at the two fish one is many shades darker. Also has extremely pronounced yellow fins.

Hope he just gets his red tail and full gold color soon, instead of transgressing back to more silver coloration.
