So, Just got done building a stand for our 90 reef, and it occurred to me that we have enough space under this stand to not only run our 36" sump with skimmer/gfo/biopellet, that I could actually also fit my older/smaller trickle/bioball filter above for a two tiered setup where the tank would drain into one, then drain to the second, and then external pump back up. Everything going into the 90 is coming out of a 55 gallon, except for we will be using new sand. Too much filtration? Will the bioballs add little to nothing with already having 60-70 lbs of established live rock?

Rather than use bioballs, I would consider using the extra space as a refugium. Depending on your specific needs, you could grow Cheato, turn it into a pod farm (that's what mine is) etc.

Bio balls will do nothing for you & are not needed in a system with enough live rock. Eventually they may become a liability.

Can use MarinePure ceramic media instead of Bio Balls.
