What's your thoughts on putting a juvenile Tang in a 75gal display with a 75gal sump/refugium? Blue, Powder Blue, etc.

I'm starting up my tank after a year off (and new carpet in the basement). I'd like to keep a few larger fish and a relatively low load. I'll be adding SPS exclusively.

If I have a tang, a few smaller fish, a gobie, some shrimp.. then is it too much load? I know that once it gets to adult then I'll need to give it up, but I figure that will be years.

There are a few tangs that do well in a 75 gal. I myself have a choc tang and it does great. I dont suggest ever buying a fish that will out grow the tank.

Kole or Yellow short term.

Long term no tang will be happy in a 75 gallon.

Even seen Yellow Tangs as big as dinner plates in Hawaii!

The size of the sump/refugium does not play any role or factor in the suitability of your display for a tang. You can have a 500 gallon sump (which isnt realistic) and your 75 will still be to small. Water volume does not matter for your question

It's the tank size, not system volume, that matters.

The tang would love the 500 sump though :P

convict tangs tend to stay a little smaller I'd recommend a healthy one If you can get one.

Blue/Hippo or PB (or Achilles, Sohal, etc.) is just asking for trouble. You're looking at bristletooth genus really in that size tank. Convict is OK when small (I have one in a 90), but then you'd be looking at rehoming it in a year or two. Convict is not an easy fish to acclimate though, as they tend to come in very thin.

+1 on the bristletooth tangs, I have had my tomini tang in my 75 for a few years now and wouldn't think of adding anything bigger.
