So after being out of the hobby for about a year the itch has come back and I'm starting up a tank again...

Decided to go small this time as I will probably be moving within the year and do not want to lug a decent size tank around!

Spec's of build...
Innovative Marine 10 gallon Nuvo tank
Kessil A160WE LED lighting w/ controller
10lbs of Fiji Pink Sand
10-15lbs of Dry Marcorock

Pic's to come once stuff starts arriving...hopefully early next week. Looking forward to starting this up.

So finally after some shipping delays my orders came in all together today... Now all I need to get this party started is a sturdy stand and we will be leak testing ASAP!!!

Woohoo! Let's get this tank rolling!

tjohnson27209
09/28/2015, 07:28 AM
Trying to...

Did a 4hr leak test last night and no leaks so thats good. Also nailed down a stand yesterday so have to go pick it up tonight after work. Do a little paint job on it and I'll be ready to go!

So finally found a stand/cabinet for the tank...looks kind of odd right now as I was just messing around with attaching the gooseneck and sizing the stand up to make sure I liked it.

Now if this rain would ever stop I'm going to star aquascaping. Borrowed a hacksaw so I may try my hand at making custom cuts from the dry rock I bought. We shall see how that turns out...

As it sits right now...

I have the same tank and it sure is top quality. Are you planning on a new media basket? tagging along.

tjohnson27209
09/30/2015, 07:59 PM
Probably no media basket gonna keep the sponges and rinse them out weekly and do a 1gallon water change weekly as well...going to try and run it without the skimmer for a while just to see how it goes.

Of course in this hobby everything is subject to change. I plan on doing some aquascaping this weekend and getting it wet!!!

10/02/2015, 07:58 PM
So being that it's my weekend off I decided it was time to start putting together the tank...

Things I did today,
1)Bought a bucket to mix water and some epoxy to aquascape
2) Leveled the stand
3) Installed the Kessil light
4) Snapped some pictures of my accomplishments, though small :) :)

Tomorrow I will be doing my aquascape and possibly getting it wet!

Enjoy the pictures

Update for all those following...

Finally got around to aquascaping :)

I took out the old hacksaw to trim some flat edges so that I would be able to epoxy to a secure flat area and to also make flat bottoms on my base rock. I also cut a footprint of my tank so I'd know how much space I was working with.

On with the pictures...

Looks a little obscene to me but then I've been drinking lol. What are you planning to put in there? I just setup the same tank for my nps coral and really like it, small but not too small to do anything in. I left the stock pump so far, had a nano koralia in the corner but it was still pretty low flow so I swapped it for a tunze nano.

tjohnson27209
10/03/2015, 09:10 PM
Yeah it does sort of look bad at that angle...not my intention!!! I was actually going for a Lion King pride rock kind of over hang.

As for stock list I'm thinking for
Fish: purple or helfrichi firefish and a tailspot blenny for sure. I MAY try a possum wrasse once the tank has some age.

Corals: lps and easier to keep sps.

Not much real estate so I'll have to be picky.

On another note it finally got WET tonight!!!

Thanks...rock work turned out better than what I thought it would.

Small Update...

Got around to programming my light schedule and mounting my Kessil Controller. Tank is still cloudy but clearing up every hour it seems.

Looking good! I finally got tired of the sponges so i opted to switch the bottom 2 for purigen and phosgard. How do you like the kessil?

tjohnson27209
10/06/2015, 11:14 AM
Thanks! Yeah its coming along now...just waiting on the cycle to finish up.

As for the Kessil, let me just say this....I've been in the hobby since 2008 and as far as color inside the tank and what I envision a true reef looks like while diving it looks amazing!

My tank had cleared up when I got home from work yesterday and I snapped a picture as my sunset was in full force... doesn't get much better than this :)

Is the color temperature and the intensity of the kessil 160we controllable Without a controller?

bitwise
10/07/2015, 11:12 AM
That light is a tad overkill. With the controls though, you should be able to dial it in. ;)

I think you'll find you have to be careful acclimating your corals to that light. I have a Kessil 150, and I'm pretty sure I killed the last acro I bought, by moving it up (closer to the light) too soon.

tjohnson27209
10/07/2015, 03:40 PM
Yes the light it controllable with out the controller...there are two knobs on top that dial the K rating and intensity rating.

As for the light being overkill...i am aware of this and have my light at no more than 40% even at my peak

I tried to show my caves and pass-throughs...

UPDATE:

So after starting the tank on 10/3/15 I still did not have any detectable ammonia in the tank as of 10/13/15. So on Friday 10/15/15 I added pure ammonia to the tank to hopefully kick start the cycle.

Now I am currently waiting for the ammonia to drop back down to 0ppm as I bumped it up to 2ppm. Once it goes down, I'll bump it back up just to help build up more bacteria.

I'll update again when livestock is added.

tjohnson27209
10/23/2015, 10:44 AM
Tank was up to 2PPM after adding ammonia...it has slowly dropped to .25ppm over the last week so hopefully once it is undetectable I will add more ammonia to see if the bacteria can process it quickly if so I will start adding inverts for the CUC

tjohnson27209
10/26/2015, 07:56 AM
Ammonia finally went to undetectable amounts last night so I decided to add more to see if my bacteria were able to consume it again before I go to putting livestock in the tank.

I will check water again in two days to see what's happened and hopefully I'll be able to start adding stuff.

Also this weekend my Jebao RW-4 came in so I replaced the Koralia Nano and MAN what a difference!!! Mo flo than I can handle maybe haha

tjohnson27209
10/28/2015, 07:44 AM
Well finally decided to take a video of my tank to show off the Kessil as well as the flow I'm getting out of the RW4...Can you say tidal wave haha!!

tjohnson27209
11/03/2015, 10:12 AM
So I had to put a hold on adding livestock as I got sick over the weekend with strep throat and I'm not suppose to leave the house :(

Was thinking about adding corals before fish this go around...any thoughts?

mcginnisandrew
11/04/2015, 07:00 AM
Looks really good so far!

You could add coral or fish first, it's up to you. I personally would opt for a fish since they have a larger bioload than coral and that way you can maintain that nice bacteria population that you've built up, but it's up to you. Bacteria grow quickly so it shouldn't be much of a problem as long as you don't add too much livestock all at once.

mcginnisandrew
11/04/2015, 07:01 AM
Also feel better soon!

11/13/2015, 02:39 PM
So made a Diver's Den purchase Saturday and the fish arrived on Tuesday...been in QT and is eating and hiding back in the rocks so good signs.

Other than 4 cerith snails nothing is in the display so maybe this weekend the Tail Spot Blenny will head over to it's new home.

Plan on getting pictures once he settles in and gives me a photo op!

gavinsepanik
11/16/2015, 07:55 AM
I Looked into a tail spot for my Fusion 10 but ended up getting a 1" pair of snowflakes for 20 dollars at a expo and so far my bacteria has been able to handle it.

Been a crazy couple of weeks have been adding stuff here and there...unfortunately I can NOT get decent pictures of the tank. The Kessil makes everything sooooo Blue on my phone and my actual digital camera.

Here is what is currently in the tank...
Tail Spot Blenny
Purple Firefish
Nassarius snail
4 cerith snails

Purple w/ yellow tip torch frag
2 headed duncan frag
green and purple frogspawn frag
sunny d palys

Will try to get pictures soon

Yeah I tried to lay the rockwork out in a tri-pod formation so stuff could grow upwards if I decided to dabble in SPS. Created some caves as well because I intend on adding a Tanaka Wrasse eventually

12/05/2015, 08:17 PM
So here is a 2 month update video...things are coming along pretty well.

I've added a lot of things these past couple of weeks so I am going to chill out for a while and let the system balance out.

Enjoy...

What are the dimensions of this tank? I really like the rock work. So many possibilities for coral placement. Very nice!

tjohnson27209
12/07/2015, 04:22 PM
Thanks...yeah its a great little tank. I had to plan out my aquascape on a piece of cardboard the same footprint a few time to get what I liked.

The dimensions are Length 12” Width: 15” Height: 13”...that is just usable display space not counting the back chamber area

Not sure if you can make them out of not but I have a TON of little bug like things attached to my glass and they move around like pods do....I am assuming they are just baby pods?!?!

rekab
12/18/2015, 10:38 PM
Are they tiny white things? Then likely pods.

tjohnson27209
12/19/2015, 12:26 PM
Yes super tiny and they move around quickly on the glass all the time even when lights are on.

Can too many pods be a bad thing?

No, The corals will slowly devour them

Nice looking tank. The nuvo 10 is my next tank. Are you going to keep it media basketless? The inTank gets good reviews

tjohnson27209
01/22/2016, 03:59 PM
I took the stock media basket out and haven't replaced it yet. I'm sticking to my 10% water changes every week and my sps seem happy and growing so for the time being I'm not going to add anything to the tank :)

Sorry for not updating this thread much in the past couple of months but it's been pretty hectic with work and life...

Here are a few updated shots of my tank and some history. The jeabo powerhead I had in the tank crapped out on me and so I replaced it with an MP10 and now I have added the IM ghost skimmer which if you can get past the initial break in period is an AWESOME little skimmer. Now that I've added the skimmer, MP10 and using SeaChem's Reefsalt I have noticed my SPS are growing daily and encrusting on everything!

Thanks guys!

Yeah the Kessil light is working out great for the corals and helping them keep their colors. I also did however switch over to SeaChem's Reef Salt so that may have something to do with it too

Deciding on ai prime or Kessel for my im 10

I've seen both on this tank...luckily my LFS has the AI Prime over theirs and I have the Kessil over mine.

The Kessil definitely shimmers more but the AI also shimmers when you ramp up the intensity. I've had good growth rates out of the Kessil in my LPS and SPS. Can not speak for the AI as they have mostly softies and LPS in their tank

Everyone has different opinions. I've seen many websites say they require 30-55g minimum tank sizes...but I'm not going to suggest they can't be healthy in a 10g. Some nip at corals...some won't. Do some searches on this forum, lots of info. :)

It's actually an African Flameback angel (Centropyge acanthops). I have been the hobby since 2008 and I am not a newbie so yes I know my tank is smaller than recommended. But I also feel as long as the fish is fed correctly and is healthy and not beating up anyone or vice versa then it's happy. My tanks rock work provides for constant forward motion, meaning my fish never run in to stop points except for the actual glass and it had tons of over hangs and caves to hide in.

that's awesome! I had no clue and was just asking because I am looking for some different fish for my tank.

I do not recommend this fish and tank combo to just anyone. It has the recipe for disaster...anything from the fish being aggressive to tank mates to it being a coral destroyer.

With that said it's an awesome fish and provides active swimming in my tank
