I don't know if this is the right place for this, but figured plenty of us have done something similar, so you folks would be the best people to ask!

I'm setting up a display refugium that will be plumbed into my main display.
it is in another room, just on the other side of a closet, and will have to run pipes through the drywall.

I'm not new to DIY projects around the house, so not really worried about it, but want to check and see if there is anything specific I should be doing to the pipes or wall around it as it won't be easily accessible once in place?

A couple of thoughts: I would be sure to have ball valves accessible somewhere so you can shut off flow if needed. I would also put union disconnects on both sides of your wall to be able to remove easily for cleaning, repair, etc.

Make you hole in the wall as small as possible so you can cover it up with a fake return air vent if you ever get rid of the tank.

Also strap the pipe to the 2x4s so they cant move around on you.

Great suggestions, exactly what I was looking for.

I'll definitely add ball valves and the disconnects on either side of the wall for easy shut off/cleaning. I don't plan on making the hole much bigger than the pipe, so not extremely worried about having to cover it up once we move, which is years away anyways.

Secure pipe to 2x4s: got it!

Thank you!

Also, those plastic grommets for desk cable management work great to cover the round cut in the drywall and protect it from the pipe. The center piece of the grommet usually comes out easily and you can run your pipe through. The end result looks nice and clean.

I have plenty of those, that is a good idea. I was wondering how to make it look at least somewhat finished rather than a random hole in the wall.

I used uniseal around the pipes (http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/uniseal-1-9d624e9fd3bd011eb7a8f1d40f457d93.html)
and picked some air duct cover or vent cover I picked at Ace Hardware store. Sorry don't remember what exactly it was. Cut holes in it and put uniseals to make them tight.

That looks great! I'm following so I can redo my piping through the wall to be neater looking.

I used a pipe one size bigger than I was running thru the wall. Cut the hole for the bigger pipe, cut that pipe about 1" longer than the outside drywall to outside drywall distance so the 'through' pipe would stick out about 1/2" on each side. Then ran my real pipe thru the 'wall protector' pipe and it looks good. I do the same thing for wiring and plugs that need to go thru the wall as well.
