View Full Version : Why are my Torches (Thin, Long and stringy) NOT THICK

My Torches are doing fine (Puffy Flesh at the stem), however their tentacles are long, thin and stringy.
I seem to see them in stores with more THICKER Tentacles.
Is it Lighting (need more or less)?
Is it Circulation (need more or less)?
Something else?
(Water chemistry is fine Alk=8.5,Cal=450,Mag=1300, and I do feed them when I feed the Acans, and Zoas)
Or is it just the type of torches they are. I can post photos.
One behaviour I notice is the open up normally, but do fully shrink up at night. (is this normal?)

My torches' tentacles are long and thin. But the tentacles on my frogspawn and hammers are thicker. I love the differences in them!
My experience but I'm no expert.

i have a green torch and a gold, the green is always stringy and the gold is always puffy...not sure why, equal lighting and flow. Might just be the specimen?

Depends on location in the reef that they are from. Some species of torch require the short and puffy tentacles and some require the hurricane moving string tentacles

Sure.
CALC=450
ALK=8.5
MAG=1300
NO3=5
PO4=0.04
Here are some other facts.
CIRCULATION: Gentle/Swaying via 3 Apex Controlled Power Heads
Lighting schedule below. This is a custom built Fixture:
PAR READING ARE (approx. 100 avg with all Lights on, but Kessil with UV LED's doesn't properly read PAR LEVELS on Quantum Meter)

These TANK pictures (90 Gal, 22" depth) might help (Main Lighting and Accent):

So it may be just the type of Torch and where it came from. (Yet I swear when I bought them they were always MUCH thicker in the store)
