That's great news! Hopefully there will be more breeding breakthroughs with tangs in the future. Captive bred purple, black and Gem tangs would be amazing

They don't mention it as far as I can find but it appears that this would be somewhere around day 50.

Hopefully buyers are willing to shell out extra for the captive bred versions. I will always pay a premium for captive bred fish. Unfortunately, some captive bred fish are terribly difficult to find due to market apathy (Marine Bettas, Mandarins....)

Big +1 on aquiring captive bred. If I knew who to contact about these tangs I would.

Sad state WRT apathy.

For some fish it's worth the extra cash, for others not so much. Guess it depends on each individuals preference

it really depends on the quality of the fish and the reputation of the breeder, especially with clownfish.
I rather pass than buy a deformed mutant ORA clownfish.
The pair of ORA fridmani I have are fine, but I have seen pretty lousy ones of those too.

Marine bettas are fish that should be bred more. Not only are they relatively easy to breed (I did it 25 years ago) but also almost all wild ones that you find in stores have been captured with cyanide.

Mandarins would be great too, but their current market price isn't a great motivator for any commercial farm to take them into their regular line-up

Due to their relative high market value captive bred Angel fish seem to be getting more common too, just not the ones I would be interested in the most: Red Sea Regals

As for the yellow tangs - breeding them is a great achievement but I'm not sure how soon this can or will be replicated on a commercial scale. The current market price of them is just too low to make it worth the effort (unless you can raise a few thousand per batch).
I would also be interested if they got them to spawn in captivity or if they just harvested the eggs in the wild.
Now, if the lessons learned also prove to work for the Mauritius Gem Tang, Zebrasoma gemmatum, then you have a fish where the effort for sure pays back...

Agree with the comment about commercial prospects as long as wild supply of cheap fish persists. However, once wild supplies become regulated, the dynamics change.

Those things are hilarious. Rather strange to see an opaque fish translucent.

Another batch of YTs are in the pipeline...

The Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University has created a Go Fund Me page ("Conservation - One Fish at a Time") to support the expenses associated with the Yellow Tang research.

So do they plan on selling the ones in the video, seems like that would be a good way to get some funding?

You would think Kevin from LA would be able to really help. These fish could command quite a premium.
