Hi all.. Just wondering if I can get results with a external filtration system like a fluval vs. a protein skimmer?

My tank is against the wall with no room behind it, is sitting on a cabinet stand.

Thanks for the advice! Tank is set up for salt, with plans to run some coral..

Reefers dont typically run canister filters, but you can. I currently have a 30 gallon long, acrylic set up. I'm using a hang on back skimmer, a media reactor with carbon and I have about 30-40 pounds of live rock and a live sand bed.

Your live rock and sand are also very important for filtration.

In my opinion, I would try something similar to what I have mentioned here-to get started. Leave the canister filter for the freshwater people.

I second what Kevin.st but wanted to mention that if hang on back skimmers are not an option for you there are a couple skimmers which will actually fit in the back of the nano. I have a Tunze 9002 skimmer and innovative Marine minimax desktop reactor in the back of mine. I could not have HOB because my rank needed to be almost flush to the wall.
