View Full Version : Would like expert opinion on sexing Banggaii (pics)

I'm trying to form a mated pair of Banggaii cardinals and am trying to determine the sex by the vent method. I've no experience doing this and was hoping that someone with experience could help me out a little. Basically looking to see if I'm correct in my assessment.

I have what I think is a female already in my display tank. Here's a couple pics of her(?). I'm pretty sure I only see one vent. Am I looking at this right? You'll have to zoom in to see the vent area.

What I think is a female.

A close up of the vent area.

And here's some pics of what I think might be a male in another tank. I definitely see one vent and I'm guessing the other structure is the second vent?

A male?

Definitely one vent, and I think a second?

Any opinions?

Hard to say. I'll try to get a picture of mine this evening. I know which one of mine is male and female.

The first is tricky; if I had to guess I'd agree with it being female but I'm not sure. The second definitely looks like a male to me.

First one is a bit difficult. Second one is definitely a male.

I'm leaning towards female for the first one as well.

I tried to get pictures but the vents were not very clear.

Looks different enough to me to give it a try.
If you have these two already why not just put them together and see how it goes?

Thanks for the responses from everyone!

I too think the second one is definetly a male and am leaning towards female for the first one. I've been trying to get additional photos of the first one to try to be more definite but it hasn't worked out. I just can't get a clear photo.

That was my original plan, however, the one that I think is a female is in my 180 display. I was going to catch "her" and put her in one of my smaller tanks but as much as she doesn't like to be photographed, she doesn't like to be caught even more!
