View Full Version : 3 seahorses?

Long story short I may be getting 3 seahorses. I've read you can keep them in groups but most keep pairs. Will 3 seahorses get along? or will there be fighting with an odd man out (or girl)? What if they are all girls or all boys?

Most likely it should be alright no matter what they are. Seahorses don't aggressively fight in the way other fish do. If they are all one sex it will be fine or if there are 2 females and 1 male it will be fine. There could be some stress in the tank if a male and female pair up and mate and a 2nd male wants to rival the first male for the female. They won't fight aggressively but they may feel some stress during some tail wrangling.

^^ This ^^
In the past I have seen groups of seahorses and they did fine together. I also had a two pairs of reidi that did fine together in the same tank.
So I would say you should be fine.

Pipefish are a different story though, especially the Doryrhamphus species - I have seen blue stipe females plucking each others eyes out at a store.

Thanks for the input. Turns out I'll be getting just a boy and girl pair (if they sex them correctly).

I also have a pair and that has led to many many fry so be prepared for that. I currently give away all my fry as I don't have the time or energy to raise them but it is an experience if you ever want to try it.
