Ive been lurking on the "large reef tank" section for probably 15 years and im finally able to take the plunge. Im pretty freakin excite and slightly nervous. Ive been in the reef game for years so the aspect isnt new to me. The largest tank ive ever had until now is a 150. I currently have a 75 that will get taken down and eventually transferred into the new 360.

The tank will be SPS dominated with a few zoas, ricordia, acans ect spread out. I plan on doing minimum rock with plenty of room for tons of fish to roam. The idea as of now is to do 3 islands but that can change.

The new tank is roughly 10x2x2 from what I can remember. Unfortunately where it has to go it wont be able to go in wall like originally planned but im sorta ok with it as it will have 2 view-able sides instead of 1. I am however building a 8x10 "sump room" so I will have access to about 6 ft of the back side of the tank and of course access to the full front via doors in the large canopy. I will also have full access to the pluming under the tank as the stand is pretty open.

The sump for now is a about 50 gallons and is custom built with a bulkhead on one end for the external pump with a bubble trap before as well as a open area for the skimmer and calcium reactor.

Im not sure of the skimmer brand yet as I havnt gotten it from him but it was on the reef previously and seemed to work well. Its a decent size. The return pump is a Blueline 70. I plan on doing a perimeter return setup with Loc Line returns. Maybe have 3 along the back, 1 on each end and 2 on the front possibly. Still undecided. Im also going to have a good size refugium plumbed in above the sump. Ive always had refugiums on my systems and always will.

As far as lights I plan on going with the SB "ebay type" 165 watt LED timer lights. I have had 2 over my 75 for about 3 months now and so far I LOVE them. I know there is some hate over them but everything Ive seen from them so far is awesome. Im going to need 6 of them.

Im not sure which route to go with powerheads yet. Im going to see how much flow the perimeter return setup gives me a go from there. I atleast plan on having two larger ones on each end and maybe 2-3 smaller ones behind the rock formations to keep detritus from building up. Flow is certainly a concern with how long the tank is and making sure the acros will be healthy once they get much larger.

The room is being started on this weekend and should be completed the first weekend on the year. At that time im going to move my 75 into the sump room to the back wall so I can keep it running for 2-3 months while the new tank cycles and gets good and settled before I put my corals in it. We plan on moving the new tank to the house the second weekend of the year. I will keep you all posted on the move and build. Here is a pic of the tank in its old home.

Any advice is always welcomed!

Wow! That is going to be a nice project. Santa Claus is being good to you. Sounds like you have a good plan, I wish you well with it.

Thanks! It just kinda "happend" actually. I was going to buy this tank from my buddy 4 months ago after he found out it wouldnt fit in his new house. I did'nt have the money at the time (and still don't really). He sold it to a mutual buddy that left it sitting empty for the last 2 months still in the original owners house. Long story short I got a wild hair to call said mutual friend last week to see if he wanted to sell it. He of course said yes and here I am :lolspin:

very nice dimensions, I'm envious. I have a 350G, but it's only 6 feet long and I wish I had the extra swimming room now that my tangs are getting larger.

Yeah I think i like the extra length vs the extra width. 2ft wide should be plenty.

I like perimeter returns a lot, that or closed loop systems. It should be a great setup.

If I built the tank from scratch it would have had a massive closed loop system on it. I dont want to try to drill holes for it at the point.

not a ton of progress but the ball is rolling. The floor under the tank was braced up as well as the room and the 8x10 sump room is being framed.

The sump room is complete. I just have to do the electric, insulation, plumbing for a few "flood drains", lay some flooring and put some plastic sheeting on the walls then all will be good to go for the tank move. Its getting close!

Sorry I've been slack on the pics. Been too busy working on the room. Its all complete other than some pluming for a sink and my RO unit!!! Moving my 75 into there so I can let the big tank cycle for a few months. Should be bringing in the big tank in the next weekend or so. Getting excited!!!

well I got the tank installed today. everything went decent I recon other than when we got to my house. everyone had the not so bright idea to push the tank on the moving blankets while on my deck to maneuver it in position to go through the door. It hit a stuck up nail and put a 1/4" (at its thickest) chip in the back panel on near the bottom. Im obviously worried about it but im all in at this point. i have the tank filled all the way up and so far so good and its been filled for a little over 2 hours with no issues at all. i think it will be fine.

Im going to start plumbing it all up in the next few days and ill let it run a few days with fresh water to test for leaks ect.

The "chip"

The tank is going to weigh so much. Did you reinforce the flooring? I is just set up a smaller tank of about 1000-1200 pounds with water/rocks/sand and the floor sagged about 1/4" or more. Had to go into the crawl space to support the tank with a scissors jack.

I'd imagine your tank will be north of 4,500 lbs when it's full of rocks and everything.

Yes we braced the floor a ton. It on a outer wall which helps and the beams are running perpendicular of the tank. The tank in 11ft long and there are 12 concrete blocks with 4x4 on them and screwed into the floor joists. It should be pretty darn solid.
