Lifeguard FB 300 Fluidized Sand Filter Mod?

i have one laying around though fluidized sand filters appear to be obsolete? is there a mod i could do to use it for anything else? perhaps biopellets? fluidized bed filters are only used for the nitrogen cycle and does not help with nitrates right?

RC user Danfeig uses one on his 1400 gallon system. He uses it to work on his nitrate level. Keeps it in balance apparently. Be aware, you need to have the right pump and mechanical setup for it to work right. As in, it can be easy to do it wrong....
