I think I'm losing the salt balance in my 50 Gal FOWLR tank. It's located outside on the lanai and since it's exposed to sunlight, the water is quick to evaporate and I find myself topping it up with at least 2 liters of fresh water every week or so. Since the I keep topping off with fresh water, is the water losing its salt balance? I use Instant Ocean by Drs. Foster and Smith. Should I be topping off with water mixed with the salt instead?

Only the water evaporates. So the salt in the water is increased after water has evaporated. Adding fresh water without salt brings the salinity back down where you want it to be. Then you just need to watch salt creep.

Set up an ATO system and fill your top off container with RO/DI water. (Less stress on your system when the fresh water is added little bit by little bit).

I agree that ATO systems are handy, but topping off by hand is fine. The salt doesn't evaporate, as was stated.
