Hello fellow Mantis lovers! I've finally had time and money to set up a new tank! Went win a 40b with a Penguin 350 power filter and the 24"-36" Fluval Aquasky Lighting setup. I love the light cause I can adjust the power levels and mess with all the colors so I cans keep it dim for him but also of some good light in there for feeding time and if someone wants a good look at him. He comes in today hopefully my buddies at the store I go to placed and order for delivery today as long as their wholesaler had one in stock. Here is the tank so Let me know what you guys think. I will be buying another piece love rock to smash up so he has more building materials.

Quoting your post, the urls in the tags are wrong.

there should be a .png, jpg, or .jpeg etc at the end of those links. As .png means when you click on that link, you're going directly to the image rather than the webpage the image is on.

I tried to edit in .png and see if I can fix them, but I couldn't locate the images. Go to flickr, right click the image, click properties, and where it says address/URL, copy and paste that with [IMG] tags.

Example:

Well it came in but it's a male Glabrous anyone interested it it? It's about 2.25 inches long.

Actually might be a G. Tern now that I have it out of the bag.

It's def a male. But think I'm leaning towards G.Tern for sure. He is in the 40b for now but setting up a 10g for him on Friday. Going to keep him. Of course here comes numerous tanks again I know it lol.

Very nice coloration, is it very active yet?

Idk to me it seems too pale to be a G. tern. Glaborus has a ton of color varieties on the other hand.

However I think it's actually G. Graphurus

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/images/g_graphurus1.jpg

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/species.php?name=g_graphurus

The other characteristic that doesn't seem G. terny is the lack of spots:

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/images/g_ternatensis2.jpg

Notice the "freckles" covering the carapace on the above image? It doesn't have that (I don't think any of mine did actually.. Idk)

Additionally, the body segments of a G tern have the pattern of Red, Brown, Green, Brown, your's doesn't have that, instead it's entirely leopard patterned.

I also want to mention the fading difference with the antennal scales but idk on that one, that might be different between individuals. G. tern is not very color polymorphic.

It's in these type of situations where we need Dr. Caldwell! So, I definitely agree that it's a Gonodactylaceus, but which one? I immediately thought it might be a Graphurus too but those are normally sourced from Australia so they are fairly rare in the hobby from what I understand. I don't see the red inter-segmental bands of a G. Tern either. I'm leaning towards a G. Glabrous.

Either way, it's a nice mantis!

gozermantis

Well now that I look more is leaning towards graphurus too.. The paterns on the back look more like the graphurus just with different shades.

Also he would peer of a little and come out a tiny bit and look around the rock he lives in but I just put him into his 10g so he is mad at me lol. Let him keep his rock tho. Peacock should be here tomorrow.

Definitely a gonodactylaceus either way, try and get us some more pictures :)

G.graphurus 110%

sorry if you thought it was something else...

Still one of my absolute favorite small smasher species, mine were always colorful and super interactive (the most interactive).

I rate G.graphurus above G.ternatensis as far as keeping and entertainment goes.

Thanks buddy. No I was leaning towards Graphurus the more I looked at him. He is already pretty active in his first few days. Not to interactive yet but he is still getting use to his new home and us peering in at him all the time. The peacock should be here today, got my fingers crossed.

She had a rough journey here but she is doing fine. The distributor my friends at my LFS ordered from had their shipment mishandled coming from Cali and some how it stopped in Memphis overnight before coming here to Florida the following day. So my hopes of her being alive or ever healthy were super slim. But I got the phone call this morning that she looked okay and to come get her. Got her home and acclimated her and she is doing amazing. She is already building her burrow and messing with me. Every one meet Khaleesi.

Can you get a better shot of her back? I'm a little concerned about the white spots. It could just be sand or something.... But before xena died that's what her back looked like when I got home from my trip and was the beginning of shell rot

It was sand particles I was worried too, but after she took a short swim they were gone 👌🏻

Succesful first night she has done a ton of work on her burrow. I kept a natural feel too it. I buried 4 smaller flat rocks and then filled the substrate up to them the then placed the big rock on top of them so I don't have to worry about the rock collapsing in. She has already made and awesome u shape and closed one of the 3 openings I had so she could choose which two she wanted. She seems really happy and safe. She has been roaming around picking up the small pieces of rock I left for her to build with. She has already got one of the snails so she had a nice snack before bed last night. So happy to have a Peacock again.

I like the look of the tank with the big rock in the center and the mantis burrowing underneath. How big is he/she? From the pictures it looks like she isn't yet full grown. What kind of rock are you using for biological filtration? Are you running a skimmer or carbon or anything special?

gozermantis
02/03/2016, 05:28 PM
No skimmer as of now but planning on picking one up from the store I go to this weekend. She only seems to be about 4.5 inches of that she is smaller. And I'm running just a Marineland Penguin 350. And the rocks I got from older tanks I've had. Nothing special. Pretty much how I've my peacock tanks forever. I've had good success this way. Just do bi weekly water changes and top offs as the water evaporates. And in using the Fluval 24"-36" AquaSky LED setup with the Skypad remote.
