I could be wrong, but it looks more like merulina than a platygyra.

Yup, a tough one. It does look to be plating like the merulina does.

Also the septal ridges are not as distinctively raised as it usually is with Platygyra sp.

It's not a yayamaensis, tough to tell what it is though. Once it colors up a little more and grows out a bit it'll be easier.

Thanks for the responses everyone. There's a stunning pic of p. yaeyamaensis on the net at this link which I'm crazy about: http://www.arkive.org/brain-coral/platygyra-yaeyamaensis/

When I got this I was hoping that mine was the same variety. I suppose only time will tell.

Ok off topic now, organism - what is that in your avatar again. I thought I saw you talking about it somewhere a while back. Beautiful specimen, still have it?

It was a sebae nem or heteractis crispa; I was never sure which. I had it for 3 months in which time it grew from 5" to 14" with regular feedings. Unfortunately it took up too much space in my tank so I had to give it up. It was definitely my favourite nem.
