Just a thought, tell me to shove it if you want, but instead of hanging the canopy, could you attach it to the wall with maybe a piano hinge? You could add a couple chains from the wall to the front edge to help support it. It would make a really clean presentation.

I'm still new to all this, but you should still be able to get in to do maintenance because of the hinges.

Maybe I'm out in left field, I just like the clean lines of your stand, and thought it might be doable.

scuzy
01/15/2016, 02:58 PM
I was thinking about that but there's weight of the light and canopy it is worrying me that it might fall down..

scuzy
01/15/2016, 03:27 PM
i might attach it like this to the wall

You could run a light weight cable or chain from 3/4 of the way out from the wall back to anchors in the wall. Basically, make a 45 degree triangle. For example if your canopy is 2' wide, install eye bolts 18" from the wall, then put the anchors in the wall 18" up from the top of the canopy. As long as you hit studs, it should carry it.

It may be more trouble than its worth, but it would be a very clean install.

It's easier to make a siphon break this way. So far I like it will be doing the canopy next and pushing the tank back to the wall since plumbing is good.

Thanks. I just ran more cables and configure the uv flow. Will drain the tank this weekend and get it back into the wall position. Hopefully I will have the light canopy base attached to the wall beams. Then I can put the sand in and get the the ro/di water filled. Start my cycle.

I got a bunch of rocks in the bin finishing soaking after bleaching it a few weeks ago. Next is to dry them out and start using my Marco E400 to sculpt a few pieces into a shape I like and creat my rock sculpture. This will be pretty fun.

I won't have much time to work on his next week as I will be in Hawaii to get away from the Super Bowl traffic nightmare that weekend. I hope to resume work on this guy and have the house start looking clean again. The Mrs. Is starting to complain about fish stuff everywhere. :)

When I started reading your original tank build thread, I wondered if you would end up regretting the 160 pounds of sand. Are you still using a DSB in the new tank? I have been battling a GHA/bryopsis, or dino problem for months, and have been told the nutrients from my sand bed are feeding the algae.

I will be using black sand in the new build butba very shallow layer. Like maybe 100lbs instead of 200 in the last build.

ah, I see what you did with the canopy now. It is kind of a track for the light to land on. I thought it was going to pull forward and back. I like this idea, very smart design. TFS

Yes the tracks helps make it floating and the added support wires on the top to help prevent it from drooping forward due to the weight.

Good to hear! that is the internal pump? I need to downgrade my SM200, Its not going to work on my smaller system. I was thinking the DC180 with the RD speedy. I guess I never realized these skimmers were built to be such workhorses.

When I bring in fish now I formalin do for 45 min. Then into quarantine tank with nitrofuracin green, do tank transfer with nitrofuracin green in transfer tank. After 12 days I let them sit in cycle qt tank for observation and into main display.

The wires are basically sunlight supply pulley system. It allows me the raise and lower the canopy. My lights sit injustice there canopy in the baseboards.

**** I almost had a fire last night as the power blipped last night the return pump power supply breaker went off , but my apex thinks the socket is on. So heater was on in the overflow where there is no water. Woke up at 4 am cause of stomach ache and notice the smell. Good thing it only burned the heater casing and there was still water in the over flow to not let anything else burn through. Realize I forgot to add in a extra lines of code on the heater programming to shut off when sump level float trips. Reason why I am investing in the new apex to send me alert when a socket is on but not sensing any power draw. Also adding in a float in my overflow to sense no water and shut off heater.

Sea Hares are awesome for hair algae removal. When I have one in my tank I never have hair algae. And you can sustain them with tried algae, like what you'd feed tangs, when you don't have enough hair algae to feed them.
