View Full Version : Will zoas kill acros?

Not pallys, just regular zoa polyps. I recently decided to de-flubber my reef, so I removed everything and as much of the zoas as I could, but they didn't really all come off, so I decided to putty over them. It looks god awful though, and is making my skimmer go bananas. If I just left them and glued in acros on top of the zoas (or in the middle of them), is it going to cause any issues?

I have had zoas almost climbing acros with no ill effects. However if they crowd the base that part will be shaded out and possibly die there.

I have Zoas and some palies around my SPS and Acro and they are all OK. But not all palies are good.
I saw you killing the green Zoas and I feel so bad because I lost all my green Zoas in the SPS tank. In general they will not growth OK but I have ones brownish that are growing very well.
Cheers

They're growing just fine! Too fine if you ask me. But if you say they won't bother the sps I might remove the putty as its a horrible eyesore.

Some months old picture. See zoas with this 2 acros.
Those zoas are almost gone by now. The red planet grew over most of them. I am looking for a picture I have showing that.

Here is the picture. See the red planet encrusting/growing over the zoa. Zoom is and look the base. The zoa is being engulfed/cover by the acro.

And he continued growing and covering the zoas. See the encrusting base on the green acro side. Zoom the picture.

These palies are OK. Do not kill the acro tissue. But grow very fast so to avoid them covering that small SSC frag, I keep cutting them with a razor.

A more recent picture of the Red,Planet (December 2015) . See there are almost no zoa left. He grew over many.
Now see the zoas near the green sps (upper left of the picture). Those are spreading well. I like those too. They are cheap and give a touch.

A b d in the bottom right you see the red ones. They are not yet touching any Acro. VERY SLOW growers. But they are touching a piece of the big purple cap/montipora that felt there are is growing. They are great friends....LOL

The point is that the water quality isn't the most appropriate for zoa growing, so it is not easy for me to grow zoas in my tank.
Palies is a diferentes issue. I had some green ones that by touching the SPS the SPS tissue was affected. So far I have 2 palies species that are doing good . One pictured previously.
But zoas I was told by and old ACRO reefer of the area that they are good. And he has his display tank with a lot of zoas growing in between the acros. So far, as you saw in my pictures, I do not have any issue with the zoas. Unfortunately my small green zoa garden disappeared slowly. If I find a small rock or a plug with them I will try to reintroduce it.
Cheers and good luck with your decision, whatever it will be.
