New tank is 84"L x 30"W x 24"D. I already have a pair of MP40 QDs I'll be putting in. Question is should I add another pair of MP40s or MP60s? I may also add an MP40 to the back center.

Do the 40s have enough power to run the Ecosmart modes at 84" in length? A significant reason for running Vortechs is the Ecosmart modes. I still want to be able to create a wave.

I have a 60" tank and I'm going to run a MP-60 on each side and the (2) 40's on the back wall or maybe 1 of each on each side

I would suspect the 60s to have enough flow, especially at 60".

Question is whether the 40s have enough flow at 84" for the Ecosmart modes to behave as designed.

I would go with the 60's if I were you. Keep the 40's and put them on the back.

Two MP40s at 100% equal one MP60 at 100% so the answer is easy. I have 2 MP60s on my 625g and have them turned down to 50% and have plenty of flow all over the tank

+1 to Dmorty. The MP60s are the way to go if you're going bigger than 48".

Only 2 MP60s at 50% and no other flow? Are you also using CL?

Im doing a 375 gallon build shortly and I'm planning on 2 mp60's

I have 84"and run two MP40QDs (one either end), they are on reef crest and work well. This suits my scape, may not suite a more densly populated scape. As my corals grow I may add another on the back wall but dont see it as an issue now.

Reading another thread of yours it looks like you do have a CL. That changes things regarding your flow. I'm surprised if your 2 MP60s have enough flow at 50% in a 625g tank. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I'll start out with the 40s then change to or add 60s if necessary. Seems like some people have had good flow with the 40s. I should get a good look at flow when the water is added to the sand.

It will depend on what you are expecting from the pumps. If all you need is some current for you corals, multiple MP 40s would work. If you are like me and will be using them also to keep detritus off of the bottom of your tank go with the 60s. With my 180 I started with 40 s and was disappointed. At 100% flow they only had flow to about 2 feet from the pump

If you do get 60s and crank them up it would help if you have a bare bottom tank

That's exactly what I needed to know. 2ft of current situation in front of the 40. I have a pair on my 4' 120g and have to keep them at about 50% or I have no sand in the center. With 7' of length I don't know what to expect.

I will have sand and will want the pumps help keep detritus from settling and cyano from growing.

If you use oolitic sand you will have a sand storm. You will want to go with a coarser sand

I went with CaribSea special grade. Larger diameter grains than Fuji Pink which I have now.

You will be ok with that. I had the same size when I had a queen trigger. The problem I had is the trigger would move the sand around like a fresh water chichlid, sand would get caught in the wet sides and need to be removed and cleaned
