Hi All,

I'm currently running a SWC-160 cone skimmer on a 30+10 gallon reef. I am seeing a decent amount of skimmate production, but the unit is big, loud and I can't help but feel that a smaller unit might be more appropriate.

Tank is lightly stocked with fish, heavily stocked with coral, and is fed reef chili + NLS daily.

Carbon dosing and skimming is the primary method of filtration.

What should I do?

Downgrade to a higher quality smaller skimmer, or keep the beast running? :uhoh3:

Your tank looks pretty good and you say that the skimmer is producing good skimmate...so...if it aint broke.....

Nothing wrong with going smaller if that will make you happy.

Have a very similar setup, and ran into this problem when looking for skimmers. My space was very limited. I just purchased a eshopps s-120. It is about 2-3 inches shorter than the 160, and should be able to handle the requirements with ease. That should be just enough to not be cumbersome since my vertical space in my stand is only 22".

That said having a bigger skimmer isn't a bad thing.

If this setup is working for your system then don't change a thing.
