View Full Version : AquaMedic Blue Turboflotor 1000 vs Bubble Magus Curve 5

Believe it or not, these two skimmers are the only ones that might work inside my sump:

Stand height: 21in
Sump water level: 11in

With such a short stand height and high water level in the sump, most skimmers are out for me, except HOBs or external models. I prefer the in-sump ones such as the two I've listed.

Any thoughts on these two or any other choices?

Thanks.

Out of those two choices I would go with the Seaside Aquatics ES5. It's the same body as the Curve 5 but uses a much better pump.

What size tank is this for and expected fish load?

I use a Turboflotor and is very happy with it.

NO maintenance, simple adjustment, low price

This will be for a 100g with low/average fish load (8-10 small fish) but I'm planning to keep a few SPS pieces in future.

I have a big-ish skimmer right now but it wouldn't fit in there so have to look for a smaller one. :headwalls:

I've also looked at Tunze master doc 9410 but its water level and cup clearance requirement rule it out for me.

Good to hear! Can you mod it with a better pump?

Open for more input :)

Sorry, just one final bump (just in case someone can provide an alternative) before I decide between Aquamedic turboflotor blue 1000 vs bubble magus/Seaside Aquatics ES5.

100g tank
Stand height: 21in
Sump water level: 11in

Love my ES5, has been rock solid since I dialed it in. I think it will be WAY undersized for your 100g though.

So, it has to be shorter then 21" and enough height to take off the collection cup which usually is no more then an inch. What is the base measurements your sump can fit?

11" water level is also going to be an issue for most all in sump skimmers especially those that short. So a recirculating skimmer may be needed that uses a feed pump. If you raise the skimmer that cuts down on the height availability.

As long as the fish load is kept to a minimum it would do.

I would see if you can make this fit. Height is tight.

Is that 21" from bottom of the sump or stand?

He mentioned 8-10 small fish. I guess it depends on your definition of small. I have 5 smallish fish in my tank and 1 tiny goby and I wouldn't use this skimmer on anything more.

I think your recommendation of the ES7 is far more appropriate for his tank.

Therein lies the problem I'm facing now - 21in available height with 11in of water exclude out a lot of skimmers once you take into account their height, cup collection and water level requirements.

The 21in has the sump into consideration. The full height inside stand is 22in.

The small fish I mentioned are royal gramma, percula clowns and the likes,

Is footprint an issue or just height?

I ran an AquaEuro Classic 135 on a VERY heavily stocked 90g with great results. They make a cone skimmer with the same pump that might fit your needs:

Not sure about operating water level though.

My sump compartment footprint should not be an issue, 16x14in. Only the height and water level thats killing me :crazy1:

Can you reduce the water level? Are the sump baffles glass or acrylic? If they are acrylic you can drill holes to reduce the water level.

Look into the Nyos Quantum 120. Its recommended depth is up to 10".
