I am working on setting up a used lighting system that I got that is run with a ardurino controller. I power the controller up with nothing hooked up to it and the back of the board is getting really hot. Hot enough I cant leave my finger on it. The hot area is close to where the power cord plugs in the board. Should I be concerned?
thanks

How are you providing power to it? It sounds like the voltage regulator is getting hot. Yes you should be concerned because it won't last long like that.

Yes it indeed the regulator that is getting hot. The power supply is a 7v wall style. If I have the controller in dio test mode and not trying to power anything the regulator will not get hot at all. Once I switch over to the regular control mode and the controller tries to turn on some strings of leds it will get hot fast. I dont have anything hooked up to the controller other then the power supply.

And some LEDs? You say it gets hot when it is trying to turn on some LEDs. How is it turning those on if nothing is connected? Something is pulling a lot of current if that regulator is getting hot.
Can you show a schematic of the whole thing? What is connected to what and how?

I don't know anything about the ardurino but some wall warts put out more voltage than the rating unless you are drawing the rated current. Have you check the output voltage.

what I meant was the controller goes into the normal program mode and sends out the pwm signals to try and turn on the drivers and follow the program but no drivers are wired up at this time. Hope that clarifies things
thanks
