So, I'm currently setting up a 120gal tank and I'm looking to run on the low end of turn over. Probably 3-5x display volume. I'll be running a herbie plumbing system. I'll have plenty of flow in the tank from 3 power heads.

The tank came with a Rio 26hf. Research shows this guy rated around 1500gph.

My return will run almost straight up and over the back of the tank. Probably around a 5ft climb with two 45s and two 90s. RC headloss calc shows a little more than 7ft head loss.

I need something dead quiet.

Eheim 2000+ compact was found by me so far but I'm open to suggestions. I would prefer to not dial back a pump with a valve.

Eheim are great, long-lasting quiet pumps.

I have had very long sustained results with both mags and lagunas, but neither are dead quiet... they are not bad, but you can hear them if you stick your head in the sump.

Am I on target with the pump I have selected?

3 pumps that come to mind is the Eheim 1260 ( 640 at 0 head) Or the Eheim 1262 ( 900 at 0 head) and the Sicce Syncra Silent 3.0 ( 714 at 0 head)

I would go with the eheim 1260.
With head pressure you are probably still in the middle of 3X - 5x.

Found one on amazon... although it states it's an air pump in the title?

I would run the Eheim 1262. I run the same return pump that goes up 4ft to a 90 and then straight across another 5ft to another 90. I also have a T in between the 5ft run that leads to a return outlet.

I see that.
Just a mistake by amazon.
You should get around 400 gph.

You can always try the 1260 and, if it doesn't seem enough, switch out the volute to the 1262 model and, voila, you have a 1262.

While I like this pump. 350$ for a return isn't in the game.

I went to premium aquatics and there's only a $2 difference between a 1260 and 1262. Should I just pull the trigger on the 1262? Am I going to be exceeding my 5x turn over with this pump? Can't find a head loss calculator that has either a 1260 or 1262 to gauge.

I found this chart that you can make guess at what flow you may get from either pump.

My guess is that you would get around 6x the total tank turn over, or close to it.

Well, total tank is probably 140 or so. So

nevermind. recalculating shows 5.5 ft of head loss. i'm thinking the 1262 is going to be too much pump unless it will slow down significantly over time.

The eheim pumps are strong pumps. I wouldn't count on it getting weaker.

Have you looked at the Sicce 3.0 yet?

I have and it's slightly cheaper. Worth it to get it instead?

I've used the sicce 2.0 and the 3.0 and was very happy with both.

Too bad the Vectra M1 is out of your budget ( I completely understand having a budget).
It has to be the quietest pump I've ever had, without adding heat to the water.

Sicce 3.0 reviews on amazon are quite poor.

A few swapped to the eheim 3000+ compact.

I think eheim will be the way to go for me unless anyone states otherwise, the concern is just between a 1260, 1262, or compact 3000.

I'd be more concerned with reviews on reef central over amazon.
But it's your tank, your money.
Eheim is a excellent pump.
I used a 1262 on my 240 for a year and a half as the return pump, until I replaced it with the M1.

I'm assuming your preference is the sicce 3.0 over the eheim? You seem pretty opposed to me leaning towards eheim.

Do you mind giving me some insight? I asked here because I value experienced reefer's opinions over the reviews I've found else where. Just don't want something as simple as my return pump ruining the tanks experience.

The Eheim is a excellent pump. Tough to beat it for dependable service.
I use them too.

The only reason I mentioned the Sicce pump was it has just a little more flow.
It's a good pump, I like them too.

Sorry didn't mean to muddy the waters.

Both are great. One has a touch more flow.

It's one of those decisions that you make. Either would work.

Wish I would have done this I'm using barracudas for maybe 400gph dailed back pump. Wish there was a way for me up open the entire pump up without the water running dry or even having too much water in the tank

If the Vectra isnt on the list, ( I have the L1 Vectra and love it) I would stick with the most reliable pump for your return. Its the life support of your tank.

I would either go with the larger Eheim, it never hurts to throttle them back a little on the output. You can never turn up a pump past its max, but you can turn one down. You will never regret having that little extra if needed.

I would go with either one large eheim or two smaller pumps for redundancy. Its the heart of the tank.

Or with Sicce being a lower priced pump, go with two smaller pumps, so if one fails, your not dead.
