Hi I am setting up a 120 gallon peninsula tank with a single overflow and only 2 holes drilled. One for drain and one for return.
What is the best drain I can make for my one hole, I believe its a hole for either a one inch or 3/4 inch bulkhead. Will check after work.
I was thinking a durso overflow with a strainer. What are your thoughts? Thank you

If you are able to run the return line outside of the overflow I would do that and use the 2 holes for a Herbie set up. I made the mistake of only running 1 drain hole and its fairly loud and I have no back up for if the main drain clogs. The next build I'm working on will be a bean animal or herbie for sure.

i would prefer to run it under the stand since the overflow box already has a drilled hole in front for the return, but after testing it i may reconsider
Any other opinions? Thanks

For the first time ever my current tank is a commercial build and it came with a simple durso. I installed an adjustable valve on its air vent before I assembled it and it has proved very quiet. Water flowing in the sump makes more noise and the tank is quiet enough to share a room with my hifi.

When I had a single-pipe Durso, the hole on top would sometimes clog with algae. After a pump restart... flood. I had a u-tube overflow that would sometimes build up airbubbles and... flood.
I will never go with less than 2 holes for drainage ever again (and will probably go with 3). At the moment, I'm doing HOB skimmer and refugium.

Mine is covered so algae no issue. But all previous tanks, which I did myself, had two drains but no special silencing mechanism.
