I really like using CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand, its a little more coarse than many of the other sands so it does not get blown around as much. To figure out how much sand you will need (I use between 1" and 2" of sand) take the width in inches x the depth (front to back) in inches and divide by 20 and that will give you the approximate weight of dry sand needed.

I normally do 1lb per gallon. And on most of my tanks get 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches.

I have a 65 gallon hex tank. and used 60lbs. the bottom is a little off but if you get 60lbs from your lfs and you use 40 they wont have an issue giving store credit or a refund.

I love it when i go in and im like oh yeah i have store credit. and bring home i fish i really didnt need to.

There's a calculator on the home page of RC.
