I was just wondering if a HOB skimmer would work in a sump. Thanks

Yes, but I don't know why you would want to do that. I have had a ton of Hob skimmers and they are never going to work any bit as well as an in sump skimmer.

Because i have a 10gal nano reef and was looking to purchase a skimmer and I would like to later on upgrade.

Usually a 10 gallon tank doesn't really need a skimmer. Weekly water change should be sufficient.
