So my last GDM died in my tnak when i came home and found him stuck in my mp60. Just wondering how everyone prevents this from happening? Would a small 1/4" netting be better to place around the wetside?

What about the foam pieces they sell to go around it?

+1 as much as I think those are pointless, they may actually serve a purpose other than catching food

You need to find out why your eel is wandering, this is usually a sign they are not happy.
I have a golden dwarf in my reef and he never leaves his lair, i have had eels in my reeftanks for over twenty years and never had one jump or get munched by a vortech.
I wouldn't run my vortechs without the foam filters. It makes it safe for shrimp, small fish, snails and the foam removes a lot of dirt. They do clog or at least slow down rather quickly but they are easily cleaned. They catch some of the food when I feed and the fish "clean" them. I replace them with new ones when the fish have damaged them.
