Hey everyone ok so tank is home and has been placed. As you all may have seen from a couple previous posts, getting back into salt water after a long break and have decided to jump in with a good size tank to start with. Already seeing by the space on the wall I should have gone with a 150 but going to start here as I got a great deal on a turn key system (although I am already planning on many changes as I just can't leave well enough alone) and can always upgrade down the road. So here is the plan: plan on having a full reef tank, will be sending the plumbing down to the basement and will set up a nice bench there for everything. System came with a 20 long sump but as I have 10' of available space to build a bench down stairs I plan on going with a 55 sump/fuge setup. Will prob put a couple 10ga quarantine tanks down there as well as the bulk of the electrical and eventually controllers and what not as I am a tech junky and will have to have a techy controller ;) here is where she sits as is in the house, will put a coat is stain on base to match the wall and prob wrap the wood grain base and top trim on tank in black vinyl. Ordered 80lbs of dry live rock and have about 20 of seeded wet live Ina bucket heated and circulated. That's all for now, stay tuned for progress and question/advice as I'm sure I will have/need plenty!

Not sure on the stocking plan yet, still going back and forth on that!

Made some progress in the basement today and sump is ready to roll. On the plumbing next!

Do to the complexity of getting through the wall without making huge holes I was forced to go flex hose through the wall and floor.

Will plumb from the sump to the top of the wall and from bottom of the tank to the opening in the wall.

Ive been watching your build and started to wonder about the basement sump idea. My question would be unless your basement is heated isn't a basement sump going to shed a ton of heat into the cold basement in the wintertime. I would imagine that could add up over time. Just a thought

diablo243
03/30/2016, 06:03 PM
Yeah honestly my basement stays pretty even, mild year round. The furnace is down there, and the wood stove above it keeps the floors warm. I'll be watching it for sure and will address as needed but I did think about that and think it will be ok.

Really like that sump. Was that from Custom King?

diablo243
03/31/2016, 08:49 AM
It was indeed and a killer deal! Has some glue on the sides here and there and some of the openings on top are not smoothly finished but for what I paid for it including a vertex skimmer it was still a steal!

Should have rest of plumbing done by the weekend and water test time. Picked up RKL and updated all the firmware and got that all ready to go. RODI unit will be here this week so will start making salt water and hopefully by Friday if leak test is good be filling to start the cycle!

Well in hindsight I could have certainly reduced out of the 90s to much smaller valves but it these for $3 each and they are fully disassemblable for service if need be so eh is what it is. Drain plumbed and gravity test HUGE success, man the water just dumped out of the over flow when valve was opened! RKL modules hung and away from any potential drip areas of leaks ever occurred. RODI unit hung and all the return plumbing is assembled. I will get another Union and put a cap on it so I can remove the valve leg and service if need be but then cap the return leg so tank can continue to run in case of extended service. Slop sink in the car, per fittings for sink and DI on bench, getting closer by the day!

Very nice so far - Is that a Reef Keeper you mounted?

diablo243
04/11/2016, 06:37 AM
Yep I have a RKL, 1 power strip in stand for light and pump control and one down here for pump control. The net module and slx module are the other 2 items you see mounted up there.

diablo243

These are all deluxe compact pvc ball valve from http://www.pvcfittingsonline.com you can fully take them apart for service and they are inexpensive!

Ok so went to Ireland, got engaged and bought a Harley so been a little off pace with my build. Started plugging away again today, got the water plumbed to the slop sink and RODI, got mixing station laid out and plumbed from the rodi. All that's left is the slop sink up pump drain, mixing station plumbing glued and then FINALLY start making some water!

I'm looking at the Iron 883. I want it flat black, hardly any chrome, straight murdered out with Mini Apes. More like a old school chopper/bobber feel...

Yeah I was torn between straight up bobber and what I ended up with, I'll likely wrap these pipes black or change then out to a black short shot pipe down the road.

Anyway back to the tank, so the latest update and getting ever so closer, mixing station plumbing done, and up pump drain for slop sink almost done.
