Protein skimmer for a 20 gallon?

I am currently running a IM Aqua Gadet ghost protein skimmer on my IM Nuvo Fusion 20. It is fairly load and was wondering if it necessary for a 20 gallon?

A skimmer can provide a lot of aeration and can be a good safety net in case of emergencies, but a lot of people are successful without them. If the noise is bothering you, I think that removing the device for a while might be a good experiment. I'd try to be around for a while, maybe turn it off on a Saturday or work-free day so I could watch the tank, but I am a very cautious type.
