Hello all,
I am new to the community and figured I post my new build. I reciently bought a Deep Sea Aquatics 34G Starfire cube with waterfall return. It has a glass sump and came with some equipment but I plan on swapping it out for new stuff. Going BB and getting reef saver rock from BRS soon. Just finished the stand and what a chore to sand and buff that thing but I have to saw it came out nice. I soft plumbed the 1 1/4'' drains to start and added some pink knobs for my coming daughter.

looks cool so tell us more about this water fall..
does the return fall down the back?

Dcropley
04/06/2016, 02:58 PM
Yes, The return is the waterfall. It fills up and overflows. When I get some water in it and start the cycle I'll post a video. Its pretty cool, I will have 2 mp10wqd's on the back wall for water movement, the water fall creates nice surface agitation and oxygenation. Sounds nice too not the typical running water sound I'm use to with sumps. I am going with the Syncra Silent for the return and a Reef Octopus 110SSS. And a XR15w Pro. Also going bare bottom with Starboard.

Are you actually going to leave some of the rock outside the water like that? If so thats pretty BA, never seen that idea before plus the water fall? Amazing ideas.

Yes, The top of the arch is going to be out of the water with the waterfall behind it. Going to get some mangroves for the back corners also. Thanks for the comment.

The scape was harder than I though. First time working with dry rock and reef scaping. It took me 4 hours, 6 designs to get one that would work and stand by its self. Then using reef epoxy stuck it all together.

Well I have the tank filled and the cycle is started. dosing with ammonia and monitoring. I did some researched and found threads talking about exposed rock in reef tanks and read the even though the rock is exposed it wicks the water and will actuality have coraline algae grow on the exposed sections out side of the tank.

So small update, I ordered 2 spears gate valves for the drains so I could fine tune them, and what a difference is sound. Having one over flow submerged and only a trickle down the other makes this almost 100% quite. Was kind of a pain to redo the plumbing but I had to do it and glad I did. Have to say the valves were $50 each! Also my Ecotech Radion xr15w Pro came in last night, I need to get the hanging kit but I had to un-box it and turn it on. Crappy pictures but figured Id share. I have to say this is one of the brightest led's I have seen. Need to get the reef link to play with the spectrum and set the schedule.

great idea on running the kessil. I'll be following along to see how that works for you. Been wanting a sleek and clean light to run my fuge. Right now just running live rock, but will add some macro in the not to distant future.

Dcropley
05/06/2016, 08:59 AM
Ya thanks, the kessil was a pricey light for a fuge but figured I'd give it a shot. I love the form and light output. The one thing about the Ecotech vs the kessil is I thought the case on the Ecotech was going to be aluminum like the kessil. Both are great quality but I feel the quality with the kessil. But I'm happy with both. I see your running the same Ecotech on the same footprint tank.

My tank is cycling I have a spike in nitrite and am keeping the ammonia at 5ppm, never done a fish less cycle before, and one have tips or suggestions ? Time like for the nitrite to drop and I get a spike in nitrate? Also I don't have a heater yet water is 70 degrees (room tempature) the heater will be here today and the controler by the 13th. Not sure if the tank will cycle properly ?

I did a fishless cycle on all 3 of my tanks. I just ghost fed my tank daily, I also used Stability daily for a week, then a 50% water change in the end (my 50 cube I just setup I only did a 10% as I was in an emergency move from my 21gallon)

I have had the same thought. One thing that surprises me about the ecotech is how heavy it is, even with being plastic. My concern with kessil was how "focused" the light is. was worried I would burn up my corals if I went crazy on the settings.

Update,
I was able to get a lot done this week, I got my won brothers titanium heater and controller hooked up and wired. The controller install is something I rather forget about and act light it never happened, It was not easy to wire and install in the stand what so ever seeing that the tank is filled and the sump is in the way but the over all results I am vary satisfied with. I also am having the chaeto double in size so far. Just waiting for the cycle to finish I still dosing with ammonia and still have high nitrites and nitrates.

So progress has been slow, My 240g discus tank has been needing most of my time due to a breeding pair that spawned, along with my new born baby girl! She is taking up most of my spare time but I still find time to do tank maintenance. I think the tank is starting to settle out and become more stable. I still need to get my protein skimmer and live stock. That will all come with time. The rock is getting some nice color and life, Coraline is starting and the exposed rock is starting to show some green and coraline algae. The equipment is great but need a ATO as soon as I get caught up.

p.s Dam pictures are upside down for some reason.

Howard the fish are doing great, they get 3 meals a day of brine shrimp, and new life spectrum. The skimmer was a must, the fish made me make the jump. So far the frags you have me are doing good, I forgot the name of the orange encrusting one though.

It's lepastrea, an SPS coral. It's the orange version of the green one in the photo. In my tank its growing off the frag plug onto the sand bed.

Update:

I purchased my RODI system and like everything with this tank build I got a pretty good deal. The system is a Spectrapure Maxcap 90GPD with auto flush, and two TDS meters. System sells for $395 I picked this one up for $260 delivered. My starting TDS is 61 out is 0. I sold it to my wife saying we can use it for drinking water too. Just need to buy the 3 way ball valve.I believe this will help the overall health and growth of the tank seeing as I have been using seachem safe to treat tap water from the start.

nice score on the great priced Maxcap. I have a 90 GPD Spectrapure and LOVE it.

I would recommend not drinking your RODI water, unless you split off at the RO. You don't want to drink RODI as it will taste aweful as well as strip out all the minerals your body needs.

One more piece of the needed equipment arived, Watched tons of reviews and after all the discussions and feedback I went with the Tunze. I like that it has 2 sensors one optical and one mechanical as a backup to shut the system down. It also shuts off after 10 minutes of pump time. Easy to hook up and is of good quality. I think I will see an improvement in stability, and not have to top off daily.

Nice choice, I use the same one. My only complaint about it is when power is shut off, when it comes back on it immediately primes the line/pump and runs for like 5-10 seconds. I know this isnt a lot of water, but it's unnecessary topoff. I shut mine off when I replace my sock so that the annoying alarm/buzzer doesnt go off. It's not a dea lbreaker though for a solid ATO.

Nice idea. The sound of the water would always make me panic as it sou ds like an overflow though :) You don't need a valve for drinking, you T off after the RO before the DI and go to a pressure tank and water spigot. Marine Depot sells a kit for this I belive.

Well it's been awhile since an update, been very busy with the baby and life itself. My 240f tank has been taking much of my time as I am redoing the plumbing and did a remodel on my fish/filter room. The tank is good and the fish are great, they have doubled in size and show no signs of aggression or fin nipping. I have them on a diet of Newlife Spectrum, mysis shrimp, beef heart, blood worms, they eat it all. I'll have to post some pictures soon. As far as the rest goes the rock is starting to color up with spots of coraline. My coral is living but that's pretty much it the 4 hammers I have are expanding but they could be better, and my GSP look great but have not grown. I still dont have the coral thing down yet still not sure what I'm doing or what I'm not doing. Skimmer works great, mangroves are growing, just want to get a handle on the coral before I buy more to just let it sit in the tank. I don't think I have found the balance of light, flow, water chemistry. I have yet to test alk, and magnesium just doing regular water changes. So that's pretty much it for now.

hbrochs

Hey Chris, pick up a test kit for Ca, Alk, Mg and Nitrate.
I like the Red Sea kit, but others like Salifert, Hanna and others. You could read for days about what parameters to shoot for. I aim for:

Alk 8-8.5
Ca 420-450
Mg 1350
NO3 2-5
PO4 0.02

5 month update, Fish are great they have grown so much in 5 months. The dry rock is doing great, coloring up and gaining life. The tank is good equipment is doing its job. I haven't lost one of the 12 and there are no nipped fins or aggression at this point. I plan on adding some RBTA's soon maybe in a month or so. I have lost a few shrimp though. As for as the starboard goes it is good it cleans pretty easy but some times its hard to get off in tight spots. Over all no issues or complaints.

Actually a single holder might work just fine for what I need. Thanks for the link. Two other questions - the BRS rock - which of their rock was this and did you treat it in any way before using it? Any phosphate leaching? Second, I love the Kessil fuge light. I run a Kessil as my main light on my current 40 gallon build. Its kind of pricey for a fuge light but do you think it is worth it? Considering one at the moment.

03/16/2017, 08:20 AM
I used the reef saver rock I love it and it will color up with life after a few months. I was able to go on ebay for the kessil was $80 used. I love it it grows the mangroves, cheato, and other algae very well. I wanted a light that would make algae want to grow in the fuge and not the display. As for phosphate I do not know as I have not tested.

Thanks, I took some time off on doing anything with the tank, was waiting for the tank to mature and stabilize before adding any more live stock. I will be ordering the BTA's any day now.

how about a new FTS?

Okay so the 7 BTA's are in and doing great, they are eating every 3 days with some raw shrimp chunks, getting 9 hours or light and good flow. I have finally tested my parameters and they are as follows:
Mag:1160
Ca:350
P04:0.06
Nitrate: undetectable with Red Sea kit.

I know I need to increase the Ca and Mag but don't have any of the supplies to do so yet. I am thinking of doing the Triton method but want to dead about it a bit more. I took some pictures but have not had to time to upload them off the camera. I have to say ever since I have lowered my nitrates and phosphates I have seen an explosion of coraline on everything!. I also have seen a decrease in aggression between the clowns now that the BTA's are in the tank. They were beaten pretty badly on 2 of the clowns and it was getting to the point where I had to remove them and let them rest in the sump to recover. But as of lately the aggression has dropped which is a good sign. I did lose one other clown looks like he was chased up on overflow and dried out, so I have 10 clowns at this point. It is interesting to see the progression of this tank. It has been just over a year with all the clowns and for the first year they were never aggressive and one day it turned into a daily battle. I think as the BTA's split and fill more of the tank there will be even lese aggression.

Thanks for the update, though it lacks pics of the new BTAs!

If you want to increase Ca (and likely Alk), I'd highly recommend keeping it simple and adding kalkwasser powder to your top-off water. It'll keep your pH, calcium, and alkalinity more than supplemented (maybe start at 1/2 a teaspoon per gallon, which is about 50% of the maximum concentration you can get with kalkwasser I believe).

It's cheap, it's easy, and it's really helpful (though you will have to be careful to top off slowly if you're not using an Automatic Top Off already, as dumping a lot at once will spike your pH).

So another update, I am going to post some tank shots and I have to say I couldn't have been any happier with the Nems and the way they look but What it a tank journal without sharing your failures. I am not exactly sure what happend but the short story is I basically killed all the nems... I had a few really good months and everything was going well. There are a few things that I can think did them in. First I turned up the Radion too high too fast, Second I messed with the salinity too much. Third my Ph was too low. These are the only factors that I know changed. But I will move one and keep learning and try again at some point. I need to figure out how to get my ph and other levels stable and at the values need to support and grow life coral/nems I have failed at both. Needless to say the fish are great they have grown and get along better now than at the one year mark. I have 9 out of 12 and as I stated before I lost one due to jumping and the other two to bullying. The tank floor is almost 100% covered in coraline and there is not much starborat left to see, the photos posted were taken several months and don't show the growth though. The rock looks fantastic and you can't tell that it was ever reef saver rock. My fuge is doing great I have to take out the chaeto every sunday the Kessil is doings its job growing it. I did have my Tunze ATO pump did and I called Tunze and that had one out to me the next day no questions asked! Great customer service! I was able to get a free Vortech Mp10wqd for free from a buddy shutting down his biocube that he also gave me. I like the Vortech but I feel that my glass is just a little bit too thick for the 10 and I could be on there stronger but the flow and programs are great and it to does a great job. The bubble magus skimmer has not had one issue and I never have to fiddle with it. I think that is it for now.

Hey, just popped by for an update, and the tank looks great!

Nems don't like salinity change and also like very low NO3, as close to zero as you can get it. Do you know what the Nitrates are running? With 10 or so clownfish its pretty easy to get the Nitrate up too high for the anemone's liking.

tanks looks great. I have been using the Tunze Kalk dispenser attached to the Tunze Osmolator and since I've done that my PH stays around 8.2 and my ALK has been around 7.5. I found hooking this up to my 40 cube coincided with good growth from all my corals and general stability. I also run chaeto although I took it offline a while back.

To your point about salinity, my nem was doing great until it split one day. At the time I had no idea why it split. Moths later I realized my salinity was way off due to a faulty hydrometer. Since I have gotten it in line the news are both happy and growing. SO now I have two. Good luck
