View Full Version : Pretty stressed about this Kole tang I got today...

So I ordered a Kole from my NSLFS (not so local fish store). He said he could get me one for 25 dollars.

I picked it up today after getting my QT back up to snuff. (It had been neglected).

Holy crap man, this fish is huge. It's easily 6" long and crazy fat. I'm pretty worried about him in my 10g QT, homie barely has room to turn around in there, though he isn't a ball of fire ATM.

Will he be OK in here? Should I just bite it and try to find a bigger QT for him? Right now he's just hanging out in the back corner not doing much but I figure he will get real active real fast.

What gives with the size? I didn't think these things got this big.

Actually I just stuck a ruler up to the glass...dude is 8" long easy. Geez.

Good thing Petco is having their $ per gal sale going on now. Get a 40b it's like $48 with tax

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I haven't a clue where I'd put it though. Need to make some space.

So you don't think he'd be ok in the 10g for 12-18 weeks?

10gal for that long, no go. Best chance is 30L-40L.

Bent go to petco and get a bigger qt tank .plus the bigger it is as you know the easier it will be to correct any params if they off

Why 12-18 weeks?

At that large, grab a 55 at the $ sale. Give him the extra foot to swim in. You can always take down the bigger QT and keep the 10g up after his stay.

Yeah get the 40 or 55 at the dollar sale. If you are doing TTM for 12 days maybe two 20L

Why 12-18 weeks?

It's what I've always done.

I do:

2-4 weeks observation
2 weeks prazi
2 weeks observation
2 weeks metronidazole
2-4 weeks observation

I guess that's more 10-14 weeks. I was always told it takes 12 weeks for crypto to become symptomatic. If no symptoms in 12 weeks then the fish is clear.

Outdated practice?

As for the fish, everything I've read on here and Tank size recs say 75g is sufficient, but man after seeing this things size I'm not so sure. One things for sure I would be putting anything else in there after this.

Well if that was 100% reliable, I'd know my 125gal display was ich free since I haven't seen any symptoms in about a year and a half, but I know it's in there.

If you're already doing such a rigorous QT, I'd go ahead and treat them as if they had ich.

Are you sure it's a kole? I've never seen one 8 inches long. Got a picture?

i think that 12-18 weeks in a qt that is clearly too small for a fish would be counterproductive as it's going to be in a state of stress far worse than had you just dropped it when you got it home.
also +1 to the photo!

wow! picture please! what size is your dt?

A kole wouldn't last a week let alone a few days in a 10 gallon. Even if in QT status. They are very active and constantly grazing.

i had the exact opposite experience with my kole tang. while in qt, he did come out to eat and swim around a bit but for the most part, he stayed still. not necessarily hidden but not very active. that changed dramatically when i put him into my dt. he was everywhere, like a bird out of a cage, still is. LOL

I would be looking at a bigger QT, but I'd also be thinking about swapping that kole for a smaller one

I'd go at least 40b if not 55 as the minimum. During your QT practice have you considered doing TTM for the first part?

I'll try to get a picture of him...

Bad news here, I'm starting to think it's an adult chevron. He does have the yellow eye but his markings don't look like the usual Kole tang markings the more I look at him.

This. 12 days eliminates ich.

In what world is a chevron tang for the price of a kole tang bad news?

It's bad news because I can't keep a foot long fish in a 75g tank...

Sell it and use the profit to buy 10 kole tangs. haha

I qt pretty much like you do. If you aren't doing ttm, then the recommended observation period varies wildly. I've seen it that you can observe for 72 days, but idk maybe you have to be suuuper observant or something since people always say ich an be asymptomatic for long periods. You probs know all that though.

I was wondering if it's maybe not a kole too. Does just have a yellow eye, or also a yellow ring around the eye? I think that while coloration varies from reddish to black, they pretty much all have the same stripey pattern.

I was also thinking that if it is old you might not want it anyway, I like to buy little and watch them grow.

Mostly I was thinking this lfs is maybe not so great :)

Lol not a bad idea. I'm almost 100% it's a chevron. I'll post a pic in a few.

Also, wow. I ha no idea chevron tangs looked so plain as adults. Definitely not worth the price tag! I'll take my $25 kole tang any day of the week over that. I have been really tempted to shell out for a purple tang though.

Ok so, it was indeed a full grown chevron. I called the place I got it from and talked to the guy I usually talked to. He said..."yeah glad you called, a employee who didn't know any better sold you the wrong thing."

He said he was totally fine with me keeping it and wasn't even going to mention it. I told him I couldn't house it. He said I could bring it back no problem.

So I brought it back today and you know what he did? Dude gave me the Kole free and gave me 200 in store credit for "selling" him a adult chevron tang.

Wow. Great service there.

So now I actually have a Kole tang. It's not small but it's not gargantuan either. Maybe 4-5".

Do I still need to upgrade QTs for him?

Wow, that store must bee doing alright if it can eat a loss like that without blinking.

that was about the size of mine and he was happy in a 10g qt. i did ttm and then 4 weeks of observation, as i recall.

kudos to your lfs!! wish i had someplace like that around here. i'd settle for a place with disease-free fish and a selection other than clown fish and yellow tangs.

I've had to use big rubbermaid tubs for QT before when I had a tank crack on me. The storage bins that Wal Mart sells...

It's not ideal, but with a decent light overtop, it may be a better solution than a small tank. Otherwise, yeah, Petco dollar per gallon is going on :)

Yeah I was pretty stoked when he did it. Actually I objected to be perfectly honest about it. The free fish was more than enough.

Guess I'll be doing a lot of business there from now on.

I got a pic of him for ya. This one is most decidedly a Kole tang. How I couldn't tell the difference between a Kole and a chevron is beyond me, but the baby was screaming and I just wanted to get the heck out of there. I didn't really think twice about it until you guys brought it up. Anyway, here's the Kole. He looks pretty fat and healthy.

FYI. This fish is diseased some way .

It's scratching and twitching it's head around. I'm thinking its flukes, which is really strange considering I'm right in the middle of prazi pro treatment. :( ?

What gives man, I thought that PP was supposed to kill flukes? Maybe that's not what it is?

He has another week of treatment so maybe it just hasn't gotten in his system yet?
