View Full Version : What vortech pumps

04/24/2016, 12:10 AM

My tank is 35" (90cm) x 23" (60cm) x 17" (45cm) in heigh.
I want to start using vortech pumps, but what should I take?
Their website says 2xmp10. But is it better to take 1 mp40 and one mp10, or will it be to much?

Depends on what you want the pumps for. If it is for just some movement for the corals but if you want also want them to keep the tank clean I would go with MP40s, if it is too much you can always turn down the output

Also depends on what you will be keeping, if you want SPS the MP10s will not be enough

I think you would be fine using a pair of the smaller MP10's.

Actually I want to go sps dominated, maybe with a few LPS in the beginning.
I think I want two pumps, for turbulence and random flow, instead of just one.
The "cheap" option is 2xmp10, but if it's better with 1 mp40 and 1 mp10 - or even 2 mp40 - I just have to buy one now, and then start to put money aside for the next one.

But I hope you guys can help me decide what's best for me.

Get the MP40's. You'll have them for when you upgrade tanks. Plus is $65 really all that much more for another 2,000 gph?

Here in Denmark, the price is 105$ more for the mp40qd then mp10wqd.
And yes, of course there is more power in the 40. But will 2 be to much, in a rather small tank like mine?
There is no thank upgrade in the near future, this one is the upgraded one :-)
So if we don't have to think about that, is the best still 2 mp40?

Maybe a stupid question, but if I have 2 mp40, running reef crest at, I don't know, 30-40%. Will the effect be the same, as I i had 2 mp10 running at 80%? There will be more change in flow with the mp10s, as they can go from 0-80% to make the wave, with the 40, they can only go from 0-40%? Hope that made sense? :-)

The main reason I suggested the MP10's was that in a smaller tank, the smaller powerhead would have less pump in the tank.
The MP10 wetside is 2.5" x 1.5 and the MP40 is 3"x 3".

With a combined flow of 3000gph. which would be 50x tank volume flow.

While you certainly have much more flexabilty with a pair MP40's. The obvious part is you wouldn't have to run them as hard to get the same amount of flow, and if you needed it, the extra flow would be possible.

But I still like the smaller footprint inside the tank.
