View Full Version : Pair of Jebao RW-4s or RW-8s for 40 breeder?

Would a pair of Jebao RW-4s or a pair of RW-8s be better for a 40 gallon breeder tank, filled with mostly LPS corals (Euphyllias and various others)? I want to use two to create more random flow...

I'm thinking the RW-4s would be sufficient, but not sure if they will be enough. I also don't want to be pushing them at 100% all the time.

The RW-8s will be more than enough from what I've read, and I know I can ramp them down, but they may be TOO much for a tank this size?

Anyone with experience on this setup that can chime in?

I'm going with the RW8s. The can be ramped down to about 180gph each. So you can adjust them to your needs. Also if you upgrade to a larger tank you can make them work too

I run 2 RW-4 with a jbwave controller on my 40b they are running at 85% and give more then enough flow but thats just my opinion.

Odysi, what are you keeping? LPS/SPS?

I'd suggest the 4s, especially if you'll be using the stock controller.

Absolutely the 8s - way better to run them low than to have a set of 4s maxed out and wish you had more.

I ran a pair of 4s on my 40B with a MJ1200 as backup and it was still barely enough for me. A pair of 8s did the job pretty well with a JBWave running the show. I also had a rather broken up flow pattern courtesy of my rock island and a big shelf that stuck out, but still.

McPuff why do you say to use the 4s if he runs the stock controller?

I have two pp-4's in my 40b, and currently they are running at only the second level.

Because the stock controller doesn't give you much control over the speed. If you have the JB wave or use Apex to run them, you can run the min speed down to 30% (not recommended to go any lower) and then it'll be safe to use the RW-8s. But the stock controller only goes down to about 45% and maxes at 90%. The JB Wave and/or Apex will give you full control and in finer increments (more than 8 speeds). I hope that helps a bit.
