Would you purchase a skimmer that required 9.5" water height if the max of your sump was also 9.5" ?? It seems like evaporation would screw with things. I plan to get an ATO system but it may not be immediate.

I would worry more about a power outage and the sump filling up more than evaporation. What skimmer is it?

Put it in the first section of the sump where, in most systems the level will remain constant even after normal evaporation.

I put my skimmer in a brute 20gallon container. Then I drilled 2 holes and put 2 1" bulkheads to flow into my sump. Water level stays constant in the brute container. Evaporation and overflow are all in the sump.

The skimmer section is the first section in mine, and it's adjustable 7-9.5" in that chamber. No other chambers are large enough for a skimmer.
