I have a internal coast to coast setup. Running mechanically well.
However. It's killed two fish. They get in there And end up in my filter sock. I've heard people use gutter guard. I'm a bit confused as to the installation of it. Pics of this or other methods would be great.

Thanks in advance

they make low profile strainers u could put on your 90's in your overflow box. They could still get in the overflow box but they wouldn't get in your plumbing.

I wish less than 1.5 inches of clearance

You can cut the gutter guard a little oversized, say an inch or so. Make little 1/2" cuts perpendicular to the length of the guard, both on the top and bottom. Make the cuts every few inches. You'll end up with a bunch of tabs that you can alternate on each side of the overflow. First tab on the outside of the overflow, next tab on the inside of the overflow.
