I have my sump in my basement approximately 10ft of head, my current pump is a iwaki wmd40rlxt, I was going to buy a new pump because mine is over 10years old and I was either going to get the md40rlxt or the md40rl I don't need a ton of flow any where for 300-500gph is fine I might want to t it off to a refugium later on that's why I want it a little larger, which one would be best thanks for any input and I'm pretty set on the iwaki brand

Iwaki's run almost forever, I would just put a good gate valve on it.

Shouldigo with md40rlxt rated for 15' of head max flow of around 1200gph or go with the md40rt which is rated for around 21' of head and max flow around 800gph or would the high head pump just be over kill as far as its head rating

I have about 14' of head from my basement to my dt. I bought a Reeflo Hammerhead/Baracuda for the extra flow capacity. This allows me to run a 3 way manifold to various reactors, a return to a 75g and a 220g (soon to be 400g). I still dial it down some with a ball valve. I tend to overbuy because I also tend to add things as time goes by. You never know what you will add later as you progress in the hobby.

How mich water volume in dt and sump are we talking about?

My tank is a 93 gallon cube and my sump is maybe 20 gallon I currently have a iwaki wmd40rlxt and I have it dialed down quite a bit I'm going to do a herbie style drain to be able to handle a little more flow and eventually want to add a 55 gallon stock tank which I plan on ting off the return I'm pretty sure the flow of the pump is sufficient just didn't know if it would shorten its life because of the head pressure I'm leaning towards the md40rlxt because it basically the same pump I have now with a better motor just wanted some opinions before I spend the $300

Head pressure has no effect on a pump except they say it uses less juice to run.
IMHO you don't have to spend here you have a working situation.
