Depends on the size of tank, I have a friend with a 500g and he has 12 clowns, I know there are at least 4 bonded pairs.

I've seen it work in tanks as small as 180 gallons (long term), but eventually even if they get along at first there usually ends up being significant fighting over territory. I would say at the most you could have is two pairs, but even that would be risky. It helps if you can get a specific coral/anemone to host them and place those corals on opposite sides of the tank.

OK thanks but do they have to be the same type clown or can the be different?
I had a pair of clarkiis that took 50 gallons of a 100 gallon as their own, but would give chase (with teeth) to things beyond that range. They terrorized the other damsels.
