Picked up some chaeto from a different source earlier in the week. Upon inspection tonight, I find this:

Good? Bad?

Here's a still of it:

Looks like a spagittie worm harmless and very good for cleaning stuff. They are hitchhikers on some live rock :)

Looks like aiptasia or majano and bad.

If you can remove the rock just chisel the rock off to remove the whole anemone.

Aiptasia. Get rid of it asap and keep a close eye out for more for the next few months.
Like ff337 said, you need to get the whole foot or you'll just spread it more. You can also burn it with acid, or kalk paste, or boiling water injection. There's a lot of threads on how to attack it if you search.

Ah poop. Ok this is the only one I've seen so far and it's in my refugium.
A) should I be worried it'll spread to the DT?
B) can I add any living organism to the fuge or the DT to preemptively attack it?

Aiptasia-x zap it, keep an eye out. Their only bad if you let them get out of control. If you take care of them and kill them as you find them you'll be in good shape, if this is in your fuge you can add a peppermint shrimp.

You can try a peppermint shrimp. I had a few aptasia in my tank several months ago and picked up two peppermint shrimp and they ate em all.

Once the aiptasia is gone, do peppermint shrimps accept other flake, frozen food?

They'll eat whatever you give them. Mine eat flakes, pellets, Formula One, algae wafers and seaweed.

I'd like to see a better pic of it. I've seen a lot of aiptasia and majano anemones in my time and that looks more like a ball anemone which is pretty harmless and won't spread like aiptasia or majano.

You can kill it to be on the side of caution, but I wouldn't. I'd want a better view, a better picture and solid ID. Have you gone online to see what an aiptasia looks like? Then google a ball anemone and compare it to yours. You get to see your little guy with your own eyes, so you can do a better comparison than we can from one... less than perfect photo.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I may be wrong, but it's not like this is a dire emergency even if it is an aiptasia.

I found a good pic online and it is identical to this:

Also I found some more smaller ones within the chaeto and removed those as well. Looks like I'll be picking up a peppermint shrimp to live in the fuge.

Thanks everyone!

They aren't too hard to pluck from a wad of Chaeto, get what you can by hand.

Peppermint shrimp seem to only eat the smaller ones, and only if they are starving. Don't pull at it or cut it-it will reproduce. I find that squriting some boiling water right in its mouth with a needle or vinegar (for small ones) works well. You can get needles at a feed/farm store usually for less than a buck.

Pods are not always good.

When there is an abundance of large amphipods, and scarce food, they will turn on zoas.

Before anyone tries to say they are harmless, do a search for yourself, many many threads on amphipods destroying corals when they don't have a readily available food source.

The addition of an amphipod predator will help reduce levels to sustainable.

I had to add a wrasse to help thin down the population as they were eating zoas, and pestering most lps and soft corals

I would recommend u do not melt it with Joe's juice or aiptasia x. They will reproduce. Good thing its on the algae it looks like. Scoop it out carefully and remove all traces of it (foot).

I have 3 peps waiting for dinnertime on same rock every day, and they did nothing as one aiptasia turned to 3 more small ones. At first they look like fan worms and they are pretty but they spread fast. They were on a huge liverock...took it out and torched general area. They retreat out of water...impossible to find exactly which spot so no choice. some people say to use lighter but torch was fast and rock was back in tank. Havent seen any aptasia since...about 2 months now...fingers crossed

THEY'RE just anemones...not a bulletproof Alien, right?...BUT I still watch for them to come back just in case. Lol

i'd just take out the chaeto and toss it. if you see one, there might be many more in the clump.
