View Full Version : What's causing this? Phosphates?

My tank has been setup for 3 weeks. All levels are 0. I don't have a phosphate test. Rock was from a established tank.

What kind of water are you using? RO/DI? Tap?

You should get a test kit, there are also some stuff you can buy that will lower phosphate.

Which levels are 0? Strontium?

Looks like you're getting some hair algae and I would say it's the phosphates from the well water. It's a worth while investment to get an RO/DI filter for topping off. Your LFS will usually do a phosphate test so that could be a quick way to find out.

Yeah.
Well water is full of minerals you do not want.
Scrub it off, Replace with RO/DI, and you should be good to go.

Nh3,no2,no3 are all 0. I have a Rodi but it needs all new filters. Debating on getting a new one.

Silicates is often the root cause of that brown stuff your seeing.

Ammonia, Nitrate, and Nitrite can help growth of many types of algae, but they don't cause algae.

Since your tank has only been up for 3 weeks I would say it is normal. Various algae's and blooms will most likely come and go in the coming months until your tank settles down. Also, the well water is not helping matters. Just my 2 cents.

RO/DI unit is a must. As others have said, well water usually have high mineral levels. Run GFO as well.

Growing pains. Yes RODI is important but don't change anything drastic or quickly or totally panic. Often if you are doing the right things, like you say you are, this is just part of it. Stay the course, it will be worth it.

I made the same mistake too, everything was browning out. Don't have RO at home. I did like 15% water changes for like 7 weeks to dilute out out old water. My color is back and everything is just crystal clear. Get mine from LFS until I can get own RO/DI.

Even if you are using RO/DI water, what your experiencing is actually pretty common. There's tons of threads where this is happening here on RC and others.
