I think I have narrowed down my skimmer choices to the following. I will be running a 40b with 29g sump. Stocking list includes a dwarf/zebra lionfish and a splendid dottyback for sure, will be adding an unknown third later on.

Vertex Omega 130

or

Reef Octopus Classic 110SSS

I could also save a bunch of money and go with a SCA-301.

Thoughts? The tank will have very little, if any SPS - mainly LPS and softies.

Have you checked out the IceCap K2 line of skimmers? They look pretty good and I'm considering one for a 45g shallow sps reef w/sump.

I had not, but looking at reviews real quick, it seems like a great competitor!

Any other input?

Curve 5 or Curve 7. I have a Curve 5. It works vastly better than the Classic 110 it replaced.

Bubble Magus Curve 5. Super quiet and performs like a boss. My buddy has one and got a Curve 7 as well. The Curve 5 is perfect for smaller tanks.

I've been running an SCA-301 for over a year now, and it's still kicking butt!

It's simplistic; quality built; and as you've noticed...inexpensive!
