Just got a 90gal delivered today to my house today, and while removing the cardboard covers, I noticed this split on the silicone on the outside of the tank. The silicone in the inside of the tank appears to be ok

Would you trust this tank?

Right now I'm thinking I'll call the tank manufacturer to get their input, then contact the LFS I bought the tank from. If they both say OK, I'll do put the tank out in the patio, fill with water, and check back after 24 hours.

Thoughts?

We have a saying the restaurant business. "When in doubt, throw it out" I wouldn't set it up. Just like spending money on a defective phone or computer. I wouldn't put up with an inferior product I spent good money on.

My opinion is that no matter how long it takes to get a replacement or refund it's not going to compare to the damage to your home when it does split open and flood your house and kill all your livestock.

Maybe if you bought it used, but paying full price for new... I want it perfect!

If it's a new tank with a warranty, I'd probably return it. However, I'm not sure why you'd have silicone on the outside seam unless it just squeezed out when the two plated were pressed together. In that case, as long as the inside is good and solid I probably would not worry.

Looks cosmetic to me

What happens when the inside silicone begins to fail? Easier way for water to leak out if you ask me. I'd request a replacement ASAP

I'm getting this tank swapped out for another 90gal in the next day or so. Manufacturer said to return to LFS, and LFS is now working with delivery to swap this with another 90gal.

I've inspected it as close as I can get with my glasses and with flashlight, and it appears that it's the silicone holding the two glass panels - and it has a tear/split on the portion facing the outside of the tank. When I think about how little contact area two 6mm(?) glass panels have, who knows how much that tear/split can weaken that area...

You could've filled it with water to see if it leaked. Most likely the seals are good.

And risk losing your warranty claim after it splits? I think you're making the correct decision in being safe.,

No, if you have to even question it don't do it.
