I am ready to rebuild my Aiptasia infested tank from scratch. I have around 20 or so big spotted mushrooms in it still. What is the most humane way to kill them or does it not really matter? I could just take out the rock and leave it in the sun I suppose. I know people grind them up to help propagate them so I am not sure if they feel pain.

whatever you do, they'll be better off than those frozen misis shrimp you're using to feed with.

They do not have a CNS. They can not feel pain with no brain.

Inject them with kalk paste or boiling water directly into their mouth. Drying them out is another option if you can take them out. Either way, just kill them, no need to have ethical restraint... as the previous poster mentioned, they have no central nervous system and are oblivious to pain. HTH, good luck.

I had to laugh at the oxymoron in the subject; you're asking for a humane way to murder something...

A humane way to kill something? What? I suggest put it in a dark spot upside down. Or KILL IT WITH FIRE

Take the rock out and sell/trade it to someone who wants the mushrooms. In my local club there are always people wanting others "pests" (not including aptasia!)

Another solution: Isolate it along with a Camel shrimp and if you're lucky he'll eat it. KILL IT WITH CAMELS

I had mushrooms take over a tank once... I buried them, and 80lb of live rock, alive. Used them to fill a hole in the back yard.

Is that humane?

Better be ready to scrape algae off that rock for a year if you kill off the mushrooms by leaving them in the sun. Personally I'd inject them with boiling vinegar with a hypodermic and wait until they detach then get them out. Some people have good results with kalk paste but they tend to grow back after.
