View Full Version : What Calcium test kit are you using?

Right now I am using the Hanna checker and it is a very long and tedious job to check calcium. Does anyone suggest a better brand or test kit?

Thanks.

I think Salifert makes a good calcium kit. Fairly quick & straight forward to use. Results seem accurate & repeatable. I've used Red Sea and they are good as well, but have come to prefer Salifert, but both are good choices IMO.

I used API calcium tests in the begining. They lack some precision but seemed OK for a general idea of calcium levels if that's all you need.

I like the Salifert test kit primarily because I've used theirs for years, so I find it very easy to use. I've used the Red Sea Pro test kit and it reads close to the Salifert but I still find the Salifert a little easier to use.

Salifert or Red Sea pro

What they said.

Easy, repeatable results, reasonable cost

I've used Elos, Red Sea, and API

When it comes down to it. I prefer API. No powders, no other steps. Just ten drops of bottle one. Swirl. Then count the drops from bottle two. Increments of 50ppm. Close enough for me.

When I've crossed the different tests with one another they were all the same. Once you redo the test with Elos so you can break down the 50ppm reading. Your only 10 or 20ppm off at that point. (In my case/experience) You've had to do the test twice now to get that accuracy.

To be fair I'll mention that API does have timed steps. I've done them and I've not done them, along with 50 other different ways and the test has read the same each time for me.

I use the Red Sea kits, and run the RCP... They are a little tedious to begin with but once you get use to them you'll love how accurate and consistent they are. Red Sea has videos on their YouTube channel that show exactly how to use them instead of just having to read the instructions.

I use API and find the test pretty simple to do.

The Red Sea Pro is what I normally use. I do have the Hanna checker as well, but don't really use it much.

Can't really go wrong with Salifert or Red Sea.

I was using Salifert. Started using API, but the vials leak a little from all that shaking...sort of messy. Results were accurate enough. API is a little less costly than the others. Salifert would be the one I'd go back to.

Was using API, now using Salifert for everything except for phosphates in which case I use Hanna.

Red Sea Pro and NYOS.
Both work well and are pretty easy.

I used the Hanna Calcium checker only a few times and then put it away, I'm using Salifert now.

I use Salifert. I'm pleased with it and would definitely recommend their test kits. I also use Salifert for ALK and Magnesium.

Years back, our reef club compared a bunch side by side using a standard control sample of known concentration. LaMotte was the clear winner follwed by Salifert for calcium. For alkalinity, they all performed equivalently.

I was using the Hanna and found myself checking CA once every few months at most. I switched to Salifert and it's sooooo much easier to test for CA that I test at least once a month. At first, seeing the number intrigued me so I went with the Hanna but the test is very tedious so I found myself not testing very often.
