View Full Version : NASAGeek's 210gallon Build Thread

This will be fun to document building up this system. I've just upgraded from a 120 gallon display tank to a 210 gallon after moving into my new home. Starting all over again.

First picture is me in front of the 210 display.
Second picture is the display. Hasn't been drilled yet. Going to do a Bean Animal overflow but debating internal or external overflow box. Gotta think about that.
Third photo is my former display tank, now downgraded to 120gallon refugium. 40 gallon breeder underneath as the sump for the total system.
Fourth pic is just a close up of the system after moving it all in. Chiller can be seen to the right.
Fifth picture is the valve manifold for the Sump room systems. Two valves will feed the refugium returns, 1 valve will feed the GFO/Carbon reactor, 1 valve will feed the Chiller.

Much more to come.

Spent the day installing shelves in the utility room and getting the RO/DI unit with pump and ATO working again. Video to follow. Slow progress.... but progress nonetheless.

Took a movie of all the shelves I installed today... it'd be good to know how to post videos for the future

Made some good progress this weekend.

First image shows the "roughed in" beanaminal return. Bulkheads aren't tight yet... overflow isn't installed yet. beanaminal is 1 1/2" pipe and bulkheads. You'll see in pic#3 the return plumbing to the sump. Supply line laying above the returns.

Second picture shows one half of the supply to the DT. My pump Jebaco 15000 has a 2" outlet. Therefore, I ran 2" piping from the pump into the DT and tapped off 2 1" inlets. I've got a control valve at each inlet and a siphon break that will have 1/4" tubing pointing down into the tank and just above the water level so that when the pump goes off, there won't be siphoning.

Third picture is the return and supply plumbing in my sump room. The tank is in my office... flush against the wall. For the 3 beananimal returns, I went straight from the bulkheads, through the wall, and then "elbow down and across" into my sump. I also expanded from 1 1/2" to 2" pipe. From left to right is the durso, open channel, and full siphon. The fourth line is my supply line. (Sorry, couldn't figure out how to rotate the photo on the post)

Next step is to build two "shelves" to support the plumbing in the sump room. If I disconnected the unions, everything would fall right now. Next, I will mount the pipes properly in place. After that, I've got the internal overflow to install, bulkheads to tighten, and some sheet rock work to clean up.

Slow but sure.

Sand and rocks are in now. I went with a deep sand bed in the display. I've read all the very strong opinions on both sides of this argument and decided to go DSB. The rocks are just piled in there for now. I'll do real aqua scaping later. I also live quite a bit of good coralline live rock that's currently in my sump. I'll transfer that out here when it's full of water.

NASA must be doing some amazing things to be able to put a refugium on it's side and have the water stay in it...

Smiling back.... I'm had the tank still on it side since I was installing to weir next. Thrilled to finally be moving forward. Can't wait to get a full water test! Heck, eventually I might even get into reef tank keeping instead of just reef tank

Insert MANY unpleasant words here....

I spend months planning... testing making sure everything is perfect.... taking my time.... not rushing....

I leak tested the tank.... everything was fine... I finished getting everything plumbed up.... tested it... everything was fine....

It ran perfect for a week.... THEN.... the front bottom seam of the display tank started leaking like a bastard. Why the heck would it suddenly just start leaking with no stimulus??? Who knows! Now, I've had to drain the entire tank... remove all the live rock and sand. What a disaster.

Ugh.

Sorry to hear about that! That really sucks!

Did it leak a ton of water, or did you catch it in time?

Since your name is "nasageek", do you live on the east coast by the Kennedy space center?
