Thinking out loud again.... Has anyone ever taken a relatively tall rectangular tank, and put something in the bottom to create a drop off tank from it? I can see some problems, but we sent men to the moon almost 50 years ago....

Sure you could do it... Not even nearly has hard as sending someone to the moon..
2 pieces of glass some silicone and done..
Paint or vinyl on the front of the glass to hide the boxed off area if you want..
Or just add an opaque box right inside the tank.. Small hole in it so it won't float..

I was thinking PVC... I'd want to build some structure underneath the upper level to support the weight of the water and aquascape. Have to get creative with the coverup on the front side of the tank...

Might have to do a little cogitatin' on this!

Yep.. PVC would work just fine too.. Low cost/reef save/available in sheets/easy to fabricate.
