View Full Version : Length of drain in sump?

I have a large hob overflow as I dont have a drilled tank nor do I want to risk drilling it. I am plumbing pvc from the two drains in the overflow to the sump. Is there an optimal depth that the drain pipe should go into the water in the sump to minimize noise? Would putting a 45 degree elbow on the end of the drain help minimize noise and splashing?

Depending on what type of drain system you are running but I'd sink it 1-2" under the water level if running anything that forms a siphon..

Why not?
You should be attempting this type of setup with 2 drain pipes.. (note this has dual overflows but the concept for a single overflow box (with 2 pipes) is the same..

I agree with mcgyvr, I have my drain submerged 1", silence is golden.

You should be attempting this type of setup with 2 drain pipes.. (note this has dual overflows but the concept for a single overflow box (with 2 pipes) is the same..

The correct dimension for a siphon system is <1". Greater than that, shown time and again, creates an issue with startup and operation.

You can still do it. Siphon is nice because it's virtually silent

The problem with an HOB with a siphon system in it, is there is no failsafe for it. Even a "dry emergency" line in the exteranl box, will do little good, as the point of failure will be in the siphon tube(s) going from internal to external. So the safety of the system will neither be improved or reduced. This was my brain child several years ago to solve an issue with an HOB that was not performing as advertised (badly overrated; now how surprising is that really?)
