Dear, after a change of city, and the necessary transfer of my tank, already running for three years, decided to play a new project in the reassembly of a marine planted.

My best reference has been wonderful Michael Hoaster's aquarium, that was the one who encouraged in open topic for deeper understanding of the entire assembly..

Important to record that few interventions in the assembly were not made by me. And moreover my financial conditions do not allow many adventures, so most of the solutions are as simple as possible. Do not expect an assembly of those "magazine cover", but I understand that, in essence, everything is done in the best technique that allows the result to be as close to natural as possible.

I like to interfere in the tank once assembled, as little as possible, leaving Mother Nature to act so that the direction is dictated according to the result that is shown daily.

I have absolute need for advice and guidance, whatever they may be. I've learned a lot today participating as actively as possible in discussion forums and was in them I learned what little I know so far. And within what my modesty allows, I try to share what I can.

It is small, measuring 80 x 60 x 50 cm, approximately 180 liters (48 gallons), with rear overflow with sixth glass.

Sump, Reef Octopus Skimmer NWB 150 with OTP 2000, TLF Reactor 150 where coal use, small refuge with DSB, lit with 6 super leds 3w and a PL 9 w.

Heating (heaters 100 w 2 + 1 w 200) and cooling (with fan 12 x 12 cm) controlled by a Coel TLZ 11, maintaining the temperature between 24 ºC and 26 ºC.

Lighting Luminaire with 60 LEDs, white, red, green and blue (these are controlled separately) + 2 T5 25 w + Moon Light.

Replacement water float, 18-liter box (4.8 gallons) using deionised water.

In the assembly I used 27 kilos of aragonite Carib Sea (with 3 different grain sizes), 20 kilos of Sansibar rocks, and Ocean Tech salt .

For the initial inoculum will use that saved it from the old aquarium RDSB, approximately 9 kilos of Samoa Pink + 9 kilos of Crushed Coral + Miracle Mud, which certainly has a myriad of micro fauna.

Let a few photos.

That was right at the beginning, where I was the "exercise" of assembly and the electrical part test.

So far, at first I finished presenting the structure of the new aquarium.

In the next post I start to post the photos of the assembly, and i write better as is the desired layout.

I thank the criticisms and suggestions. Within my possible I will try to make corrections and adopt relevant suggestions.

Awesome start, Edimar!

I was only able to see the first and last photos. One possible solution is to limit photo width to 600 pixels at 72 dpi. This can be done in Photoshop, in Image size. Whatever photo software you use, there should be a way to change the image size.

Your system components are very nicely organized. As you said, this is one of the things you are particularly good at, and it shows!

What plants do you plan to add?

I look forward to more!

They're all there! Very nice setup!

What's the big, plastic box for? Wait, you said "replacement", so you mean a water change box? Great idea, putting it close to the tank. I can't wait to see more!

I like the tank size and your equipment looks pretty solid.

Are you near the ocean where you can harvest macros for your tank? If not can you order them online etc?

Looking forward to seeing the results.

Michael is a water change box yes. My English is not the best ... rrrsss ...

A lot has changed since these first pictures, why it's been almost two weeks it's all working. I originally added to deionised water, salt, left beating very own aquarium in and then added the substrate. After the water to a first cleared, I added the rocks, trying to get a definitive layout. And so it was running until yesterday, when then added the old aquarium inoculum.

BlueCat1949, responding to your question and Michael's, I plan to add macro initially national algae, because I do not live near the sea and here in Brazil is very difficult to get this kind of material, when you live from the sea. It is likely that next week I order a first batch of macro algae.

I will inform here which species in the third stage. At first I posted the photos of the system "clean", no water, only to have an overall idea of the equipment - done. In the second, I will add the system pictures already with water and the layout. And the third I describe better my "work plan".

Dear cJRpMzZe 619 e OrQidz, grateful for the observations!

The layout designed restricted to rocks in the background, mimicking a small wall, but with a blue background above it ("horizon line "), in the middle of a large rock, to be confused with the wall when viewed from the front, and the side view simulating a small canyon, my desire from other assemblies.

Considering the sea grass, for example, the most concentrated point in the center of the substrate assembly, simulating a "stage", surrounded by smaller rocks. Up ahead, a few scattered rocks.

The way I set up the lighting, with the rearmost lamp, in the center and in the background are green macroalgae, near the brown stage borders, and beyond, red and blue.

I want to have coral too, but considers the limitations that the highest level of nitrate and phosphate imposes on the maintenance of them, but as the basis of the marine aquarium is patience and observation, I'm doing the experiments.

At the time the skimmer is working right, considering the beginning, where we have a lot of unwanted dirt on the water, especially in my case I added an aquarium inoculum already matured. But soon I intend to leave only a mechanical filter working in the sump and will connect the skimmer once a week, always one day before the partial exchange.

Proving the usefulness of inoculum, three days after added to the aquarium, as I see a lot of brown algae on the rocks, especially with the lights off.

Let a few photos ...

The inoculum was kept for a few months in this small aquarium after disassembled the main. With skimmer and replacement water properly.

In it I have samoa pink, crushed coral and miracle mud. Fauna, only a few mini hermit crabs, snails born in the same aquarium, neritina, a wad of Chaetomorpha and I small coral, "saved" the old aquarium.

The Chaetomorpha and coral are the refuge set up in the sump. The rest of the fauna was for the display.

I had a little setback here. I found after some testing, the power cord set of white LEDs is defective. So the photos are very drawn to the blue, even ugly, why have only illumination of blue and two T5. Once I purchase a new cable I'll be able to take pictures with the correct lighting.

Another clarification. In the pictures you can see two circulation pumps. Though my desire was to come up with a way to hide, while I could not imagine any solution. But the intention is to leave only one pump, Jebao WP 25. Tunze which is positioned below and in the background is there for now, just to optimize the movement in this first stage. While considering using it to eventually make a clean sweep in the rocks.

Ahh, the brown stuff. Diatoms. The first sign of life!

Your pics are great. You don't have to keep them at 600 pixels tall, just 600 wide, by the way. So your vertical photos would be 600 wide x 800 tall or so.

I think jraker is right. It's a calcified macro, like halimeda, so it likes a little calcium. Score!

And it puts brown !! I can not add the macroalgae in this first stage of maturation, in order to compete with microalgae and filamentous. I have just a little Chaetomorpha the refuge.

The problem is that filamentous also are in full force ... It worries me ... I think the old aquarium inoculum was too "contaminated" ...
Well, as first actions, I cleaned the equipment, adjusted the density to 1,025, reducing the intensity of the LEDs for 40%, made a return of 5%, and put more of a circulation pump on the display.
What I suggest you do more?

Michael, honestly I do not know how to best fix the photos. Adjust to 443 x 249 pixels the landscape photographs. I then put in 800 x 600? Not quite understand your suggestion ...

Have you added any fish or snails? You need some kind of animal to drive the cycle, and get the beneficial bacteria going. Add the macros whenever you can. I had all my plants in before my tank was full of water!

On the photos, I'm referring to the width, which can be up to 600 pixels. If you have a tall photo, the height can be more than 600. So your photos can be a little bigger. Sorry for the confusion, your photos are great!

Michael, as I said above, I added the substrate from my old aquarium to the new. In the substrate, as it was an aquarium matured for more than three years, certainly it contained very microvida. The proof is that the brown algae appeared in little more than four days after the inoculum added the old aquarium ... But I have about 10 mini hermit crabs in it.

As for macroalgae, I saw that his strategy was to add a lot of seaweed at the beginning of maturation, so that the competition of them take off the prevalence of microalgae. The problem here is with the logistics it. I have to order the far away place of macroalgae here and depend on scheduled collection to get my ...

Está ficando bom! Legal ver outro brasileiro por aqui.

Looking good! Good to see another brazilian here :)

Where do you order macros from? I've looked everywhere here (I'm in Santos, São Paulo) and I've only managed to get a bit of Grape Caulerpa and some others that I collected from the wild.

Do you plan on putting mangroves too?

Hello fellow!

Sends me a PM I talk better to you about the subject "collection macroalgae," okay?

I intend to put red mangroves in the refuge, which is in the sump on the right, which is illuminated as you see in one of the photos. As there is a layer of about 12 - 15 cm substrate and the free part, water depth is shallow, is the place I planned to simulate a mangrove biotope.

Dear, after a little blackout, as it was still without news, follow photos of the current stage of the tank.

The algae ordered arrived the day before yesterday, but apparently without any care in the collection, so I had to endure the terrible smell first, since it took four days to arrive, then make a selection, even with very little knowledge of species.

I removed some rocks and glued the selected algae, taking care to try to keep the red ones separated from the browns and greens.

The result, for now, seems reasonable ...

Edimar, the new photos do not show up. I still see your last photos fine.

Sounds like you got some macros started. Best of luck!

Michael, when I posted the photos they appeared without error. I do not know what happens. Unfortunately I do not know what happens. I will have to stop posting the news, because it does not make sense to do it right and then the site changes what was done. A feather ...

The stage of disappointment has passed ... I went to check and found that although I reduced the photos, when uploading to Google Photos, it was the normal photos, not the reduced ones. Strange is that the site does not criticize the size of the photos and allows you to attach large photos. There should be a warning or just not allowing the photos to be attached ... I think I'll be able to put the reduced photos now ...

The first picture is from the Reverse Osmosis system I acquired for my residence, and I made a derivation for the Deioniser I made. Only after adding the macroalgae did I start to use really pure water. So I still have some diatom and a little filaments (which I actually think are derbysias).

The good thing about an aquarium is that stress with algae disappears, because, after all, it is an aquarium for them ...

As I reported, the algae I acquired arrived without any care in the selection, so I expect many losses. But I think the environment is relatively stable and mature to receive them.

I hope a good part survives this first moment ...

Looks like you got a good variety of plants. Nice pics! Do you plan to add fish?

EdimarOliveira
11/15/2016, 01:10 PM
My intention is to put fish last, unless I find the ones I want, easily. I want to first try to stabilize the introduced macroalgae, then invest more in cleaning staff and only last add fish.

My preference is for Salarias fasciatus, Royal Grammna, Percula Clown, Elacatinus oceanops, E. figaro, and Dragonets.

I asked because I didn't see any, and adding fish will help your plants.

Tank looks great!

EdimarOliveira

Two things I read today very interesting were: fish are interesting to make food available to the macroalgae, and the chaeto compete for nutrients with the others - something obvious but I had not awakened to this! I have chaetos in the refuge and they are developing very fast - they will have another destiny soon!

Michael Hoaster
11/16/2016, 01:17 AM
Right! The plants need their food. You can add fish and fish food to feed them or you can dose different nutrients. Fish are more fun!

Your tank is coming along. I'm happy that you fixed the photo problem and we can see what your latest tank looks like :)

EdimarOliveira

Chasmodes, with this setback, the topic ended up being truncated, with the empty spaces of the photos, but, what can be done? Living and learning ...

I lost most of the macroalgae. The fact is that the transport took them four days and when they arrived there was a lot of hydrogen sulphide gas, and this seems to have intoxicated them to the point of not recovering.

Anyway, as I said before, it is very difficult to find shops selling quality macroalgae - it is a great limitation for growing them in an aquarium ...

But we learn from the mistakes, pity that costs their lives ...

Michael Hoaster
11/18/2016, 04:26 PM
Sorry to hear you lost most of your macros. The same thing happened to me, when I first started my tank. I was doing my best to keep nutrients low, to prevent an algae outbreak. My macros kept shrinking until they were gone. Then I added the blennies, and fed them well. Cyanobacteria outbreak. Three months later, tiny macros started popping up around my tank! It took a while, but eventually my tank conditions were ready for the macros to flourish.

Have you removed the chaeto? Have you started feeding the tank fish food? Have you added any snails or pods? How about a fish or two? Do all that and things should improve. Right now your tank is like a flower pot with no dirt. It's clean and nice, but no plants will grow. Get it dirty!

EdimarOliveira
01/02/2017, 03:33 PM
Dear, few but important news ... The red macroalgae are sprouting! At least three that I planted in different locations of the tank are showing small red shoots. My choice was to move as little as possible, but I will do a very discreet pruning to remove what is dead. Overall the tank is quite filamentous, but nothing that frightens me, because I still have virtually no cleaning staff. I'm just letting things happen ...

For now, that's it ...

Very cool! You're proving that, even without easy access to the things you need or want for your aquarium, you can still be successful! Bravo!

Hopefully, as your macros grow, the micros fade away. That's what happened in my tank. If you could acquire just a few Cerith snails, they will reproduce, and eat a lot of algae.

Can not wait to do this, Michael! They will certainly do a beautiful job as soon as they enter the tank. I intend to buy Berghias too - I can get it from a reputed store in a large center here.

I'm in a little bit of a rush too because it's vacation time and I've been away from home for a few periods. I am therefore avoiding increasing population and not being around to follow, not to mention that the heat here is very difficult ...

Do you have aiptasia anemones? I saw none in your pics. I ask because berghias eat nothing but aiptasias, so if you don't have one, you don't need the other.

There's a real jungle, Michael, practically the same as yours. But as my cell phone camera is quite limited, you can not tell. Even though they have the color very similar to filamentous, they are very well camouflaged.

Food for the Berghias is not going to miss, for sure!

Got it. I can't take a pic WITHOUT aiptasias in it! Believe it or not, I have fewer now. It's not so much like a jungle now-more like scattered patches of them.

They seem to have the ability to blend with surroundings. I had one on some blue hypnea, and it was blue!

Progress?

EdimarOliveira
01/23/2017, 04:22 AM
Hello Michael!

I can say that progress is happening. But not at the pace I'd like.

A few days ago my vacation ended, I traveled for the entire period, and the aquarium was only in the hands of the fresh water tank and the UPS.

Nothing abnormal has happened and although there are many filamentosas, as the aquarium is still without a proper cleaning team, I think things are going at the pace of mother-nature ...

This week I should finally be able to get snails nishi and a shrimp dancer to deal with the aiptasias.

Hey, Edimar! I hope you had a great vacation.

If you can, get some Cerith snails. They have a spiral-cone shape. They will reproduce in your tank, so their population can grow as large as your algae will feed. You will have a variety of sizes, including tiny ones, that can meticulously clean every leaf of your macros.

Your pictures aren't showing. Maybe too big? RC likes pics to be no wider than 600 pixels at 72 dpi.

Michael, frankly, I do not know what else to do about the photos. I think I'm going to have to switch hosts. The photos opened perfectly after I created the topic and are in the size of 435 x 245 pixels. That is, they are not great ... The topic is getting horrible like this, full of photos that do not open ...

One of the photos shows the shoots of one red seaweed and the other, a general, from a favorable angle.

Anyway, I will look for another hosting, because in Google Photos is not working well, at least I do not know how to use.
