some rock designs (by Jestersix).. going to focus on minimalist style. 3 main structures. mainly small fish so lot of little caves for them to hide.
only 2ft of clearance up top.. so building in layers

4000-5000lbs with no water?? That sounds REALLY high. I would think closer to 1500lbs empty.
That is awesome that you found someone to move that tank. Really interested to know what that cost you. Next time I get a tank, I'm having someone bring it in my house. Way too much stress last time I did it...and that was with a 8' tank. I couldn't imagine a 10'.
Excited to see this tank setup. Looks like it's gunna be a monster!!!!!

I was told the tank should be around ~-1500 - 2000lb and the steel stand is solid. This is just an estimated number I got quoted on.
total moving price was $2100. up to 1mil insurance.
the other few rigging companies quoted well over $4000

too much... :sad2: I had no intention of upgrading. Went to Unique Corals to buy some reactors and the opportunity just popped up. I planned to get skimmer and pump from Royal Exclusiv because I loved how my DC180 skimmer works. So I figured with those 2 pieces, my budget should be around 10k for everything...
then I decided to upgrade UV size, upgrade ATO, heck then might as well buy the AWC along with ATO.. before you know it, 20k gone.. I have almost all the equipment ready now. Just need to spend a few hundred more on plumbing
I think the only major equipment left is the tank chiller and a split AC for myself. I am looking at a 1.5HP tank chiller. Probably going to be another 3k after the installation
also looking at some future equipment: Minstream, JWelsh's Testers, MOAI robot, etc.

m0nkie: I actually like what you've done with the rockwork, it will bring a much needed dimension to your viewers of the tank. I can see that you will enjoy watching the fish swim through the arch in search for food and refuge. Good luck with your build and thanks for sharing. BTW: I'm glad someone made that neighbor move to assist you with the tank delivery - the nerve of some people.....j/k. I can't wait to see the WET photos or videos with the equipment in action.

The only issue I've ever had (on a much smaller scale) with tall rock structures is obstruction of flow. Not something to worry about too much if you have plenty of power heads, etc.

Yeah I bought the adapters too but they kinda suck, the bulkhead for the emergency drain is cut to 1/2" And the bulkhead for the input takes away the pipe that sits inside the rollermat to disperse the flow. I'm planning on ordering all metric stuff to use all the plumbing the way it was designed, was only gna be about $30 or so

No output noise, here is how I did mine. The plug at the top is just hand loose, it allows air out but blocks any noise you might hear in the pipe.

so the Gyre 280 standalone unit is still out of order.. this got me thinking about switching to Vortech MP60s. The only pump that won't have any wires inside the tank, which I really dislike.
What do you guys think? 2 Gyre 280s or 5 MP60s. (I know gyre quality)

2 MP60 on each side and 3 on back wall? over kill?

That's what I used to think about Abyzz pumps too...expensive return pumps until one member here showed me how he used it for flow and a Red Dragon pump for return. His tank is silent and no excessive hardware for a clean look. I am sure you've done the math on on the cost of 5 MP60s so you might as well look into Abyzz. It's not for everyone but if I were in your shoes it's something I'd definitely look into before pulling the trigger on Gyres or Vortechs.
Just make sure you talk to someone who has experience with them.

you may not need this. You are using one RD for return and the other for a closed loop? right.. if so those RD pumps are pretty powerful. depending on what mode you may not like the noise of a gyre or mp60 if the wall behind the tank is a bedroom. what current flow turnover rate and internal flow rate are you reaching for I guess is the best question to ask. my first batch of fish in my 450 are getting blown around with two tunze 6255. I had to turn them down some. I know this may change in time but I think my flow is fine for the time being.
m0nkie
10/11/2016, 04:25 PM
I'm not running closed loop. That seems like the option to go for big tanks? I just don't like all the PVC plumbing. Got 1 RD230 for the 4 seaswirl returns. 1 RD180 for manifold. I assume I'll be running both on low %
haven't calculated the flow numbers yet. I just wing it by how my fish swim. haha.. I was thinking a few MP60s at first and then add more as SPS grows. but now I'm really liking the Panta Rhei ECM63. seems like 1 can push the whole tank. Less power, less heat, less controllers. Cheaper than a bunch of MP60s.
just can't find many users with these German pumps
wishntoboutside
10/11/2016, 04:49 PM
the RD3 pumps are strong. I have it running at 80 watts and it goes thru a UV.. down a wall to an external chiller back into 2 sea swirls. The other RD3 goes to 2 other sea swirls and at 75 watts. If I go above 120 my water level rises and the sump drops quickly.
I know the abyss stuff is really nice but I don't know to much on the Panta pumps. One can never go wrong with mp60's or tunzes. Anything gets chucky inside the tank. My 6255 are chunky for sure.

question guys.
The steel stand has these 1/4" stumps on each leg. The sump is sitting on the corner of the stumps. So all 4 corners are flat but it is lifted about 1/2".
Would these work to fill the empty space under the sump? not looking for spill protection, just some stuff to fill the space. 1/2" acrylic boards get expensive

I had plans to buy your LED bulb at first. I've been using white HD flood lights for years. I was talking with a Kessil rep and they recommended the H series over freshwater light. The purple magenta color include red, and blue lights. Covers everything macro algae needs.
I have the ARID for chaeto. So I plan to grow some different macro algae for a show refugium. The Kessil is mainly for looks and sleek design. maybe useful in the future for other plants ;)

Just checking, you are running a gate valve for the main siphon in your bean animal overflow? Make sure the gate valve is close to the over flow box, NOT close to the sump.
Also make sure you cut the siphon pipe about 1" under the water level in your sump. Otherwise the full siphon will never start.

Looks like your sump has a roll of toilet paper in it. It's a dump sump.
Is it 2 ply rolls? Crazy build - when will you have water in it

lol.. the Rollermat is pretty much an expensive toilet paper roll.
I'm hoping next week. Literally just waiting on John to drill this hole and connect my return pump. and he bailed on me twice already

Thanks. Whats the reason for having it next to the overflow instead of sump?
I have it next to the sump now to look cleaner. But i can switch it if needed
I would have to look it up, but I think it has to do with being easier to adjust. The further away the gate valve is, the more it fluctuates. Idk, Something like that. Not saying it won't work, but I remember reading about wanting it as close to the overflow as possible.
m0nkie
10/31/2016, 11:52 AM
thanks gotcha. I kinda remember too. This is years ago from reading hundreds of pages on the overflow thread.. I think being closer, it's faster to trap the water and create the siphon.
anyways. John came to my house at 11pm last night and fixed the hole issue.

Here we go. Sump is here. Thanks to John at advanced acrylic.
Sump was divided in 2 for easier fitting. Entire back roll has different sized holes for equipment plumbing. Also built a few controller holders. John will come do all final fixing after
Left sump: 3 sock holder, sock silencer, theiling rollermat section, skimmer section.

Im interested in how the theiling rollermat. Way cool idea. Is it a cloth that you throw out after its all used?
m0nkie
10/31/2016, 12:21 PM
it's a type of fleece, 20g/mē filtration pore size.
Basically water filters through it until detritus builds up on the pore and clogs it. Water level will increase inside, moving the roller. The roller will rotate the "toilet papers" until water can pass through clean pores again. The discarded fleece will be rolled up above water level. This way detritus won't build up like an old filter sock. after a few months, just toss out the roll and put in a new one.
I plan to test out the rollermat along with socks. But it's mostly for vacation preparation. Remove the filter socks and attach the rollermat

Watchman gobies paired with snapping shrimp are always need to see. They'll stir up the sand a little but not a whole lot.

I chose John because he's coming to my house to do measurements. I have never seen Advanced Acrylic lids before

that's not going to be fun... i was hoping some female could lessen the aggression between the males. I have Flame, Rhomboid, and Lineatus male already. They harass each other all day, I can hear them jump and hit the nets

the thing with BA is I have 2 different overflows. I was on the BA thread discussing for awhile and most of them say I cannot achieve true BA effect.
with the 2 maggie muffler, I'm running the RD at 80%, both full open valves and still fairly quiet
another issue was with the weir teeth height. about 2 inches tall. water splash sound was loud. I raised the emergency and all the pipes higher. But if I want to use the BA's 90 pipe, it won't fit under the overflow cover

Here it is the Panta Rhei at 100%. I turned off everything so there is no sound in the room. You can hear the little hummm noise as I get closer to the pump. Anything less than 80%, you cannot hear in a totally quiet room.
At 100%, you can see the waves at mid point still. minor waves at the end of tank. However, this is not like the WAV or MP pump where water goes very straight. Water seems to go in up and down motion. like how we would float on the ocean surface
I still need to move the pump a little lower. It's creating a small vortex at times. I will also move the pump to the right side and hide it behind the rocks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDlsq6z2hig
surface agitation is great too. With no other equipment on, this thing is moving a ton of water. you can see the waves crashing against every wall.

I plan to do a full 90 day QT inside the display tank for this CUC.
If i buy the whole 500gal worth, I may lose quite abit through out the months..
If i buy only 100gal worth, I will need to set up another QT later on for another 90 days QT..

Photobucket is having so much issue lately.. trying out google photo.
Got the Rollermat hooked up. Not much to clean so it's off, but the plumbing is done. The intake was reduced to 19mm as recommended for separate pump. Output remained 40mm. Connected with a 30w Jebao DC pump which pumps out the recommended output at 90%.
I'm not sure if it works with the output completely submerged under water. It seems fine. 100% quiet. I don't have detritus to test out.
I have the sump designed so that the baffle after Rollermat traps all the detritus in that section. Water overflows from the top. easier to maintenance. This will be the most often cleaned spot.

This is what we use Tony. You can get it at any grocery store or even walmart. If you get two, take the sponge out of one to use in tight spots. It works so well that i was able to wipe hard coraline off acrylic without scratching.

I dip in lugol and bayer. Bayer for all the easy stuff. Lugol for any coral with cuts or new frags..
afterwards I put them in this tank. About to seal it off for 3 months fishless QT.
after that, I will frag the corals off the plugs and glue them into the DT.
then more shopping and more QTing

Should be ok. I use a 20 mm scalpel to cut zoas and you can use tweezers to hold the frag till it attaches to rock. I've recently tried Ecotech Marine glue and it bonds much faster than anything else I've tried.

I bought those 2ft long tweezers. I need to stand on a ladder, probably lay flat on top of the tank, and then try to reach the sandbed with that tweezer.
if the flow blows that zoa away, it's gone... lol

I got this one fairly cheap from Jeffrey after he sold his tank stuff. I was going to use this to power my TV and some entertainment system during lights out. Maybe I'll put the return pump and heater on too.
IME my neighborhood only gets black out during scheduled maintenance or rolling black out. They typically take 12hrs and my tanks have gone through them without issue.
I do plan to get the Testla wall battery as soon as they become available. That should last me a day with solar charge.

here's a quick update.
sooo after hearing just about every excuse in the book, John from Advanced Acrylic finally finished some products. products I paid for 10 months ago in Oct 2016.. while waiting, I started building my car and allowed the tank to cycle for 10 months..
work in progress

here's the tank cover AA made (peel still on).. I wasn't expecting it to be solid. thought it would have some netting. but I guess I didn't make it clear enough during instructions either so eh.. tank is already running at 83 degrees today. without house AC or any chiller. I think a full cover will be too much. these can be winter covers.. the little pop ups are for mounting my APEX night light LEDS. also comes with a spot for APEX autofeeder. side gaps are to fit the sea swirls

thanks. I'm going to do measurement again and talk with artfully acrylic. I was going for them last time but John convinced me he can make nice tops. This top looks like it was made in 10 minutes..

I was disappointed with my artfully acrylic cover. For the price I paid it look not finish and raw still had shavings attach from the machining. But it does its job in keeping my sons hands and whatever he can from getting in the water.

Is there a nicer option though? I am really happy with mine. Much cleaner than any DIY or manufactured aquarium screen cover.

started carbon and gfo today. Trying out the Next Reef reactor. cool little toy.
water pumps in from the bottom, pushes out from the top and overflows around the edges. The base is a little bigger so you can place the reactor next to a wall and water won't flow out of sump.
the flaw.. hard to clean the dry carbon at first. and the entire reactor depends on 2 small 3mm o rings. lose either o-ring and the whole thing falls apart. and I don't think tumbling is possible..
